WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 6, 2013) - After posting outstanding
performances in a pair of dual meet victories last weekend, William and Mary
men's gymnasts Landon Funiciello and Neal Courter have earned weekly honors
from the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Funiciello was selected as the league's
gymnast of the week, while Courter was chosen as the rookie of the week.
A two-time ECAC gymnast of the
week selection this season, Funiciello captured the vault title (15.05) and
placed second on rings (14.7) in W&M's victory against Army on Saturday. In
the following afternoon's triumph at Springfield, the Baldwinsville, N.Y.,
native won the rings title (15.3) and placed third on floor (13.8).
Additionally, he registered scores of 14.6 and 14.8 on parallel bars in the two
dual meets.
In addition to excelling in the gym,
Funiciello has distinguished himself as an outstanding student and is a
two-time College Gymnastics Association first-team All-America Scholar-Athlete.
Later this month, he will be awarded his third W&M Provost Award for maintaining
a GPA better than 3.5.
Courter was honored as the
conference's top rookie last week after playing an instrumental role in both of
the Tribe's victories. In addition to capturing the high bar title (13.9) at
Army, he placed second on vault (14.85) and third on floor (14.55). He also
came up big in all three events the following day, posting a 14.3 on floor, a
14.15 on vault and a 13.7 on high bar.
An outstanding student, Courter
plans to double major in chemistry and French.
The No. 13 Tribe will return to
