Tribe Baseball Clobbers Hofstra to Complete Series Sweep

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William and Mary baseball team completed a three-game Colonial Athletic Association sweep of Hofstra with a 14-0 thumping over the Pride on Sunday afternoon at Plumeri Park.  W&M built an insurmountable 7-0 lead after two innings of play as it finished the contest with 14 runs on 19 hits.  The win improves the Tribe's record to 31-17 on the season and 14-7 in CAA play, while the setback drops Hofstra to 23-24 overall and 8-13 in league action.

At the plate, sophomore Michael Katz paced the W&M bats with a 4-for-4 effort, which included four RBIs and three runs scored.  Junior second baseman Ryan Lindemuth finished contest with three RBIs, two hits and a run scored, while senior shortstop Ryan Williams went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in.  Freshman left fielder Jonathan Sarty drove in a pair of runs to go along with a run scored, while senior right fielder Derek Lowe went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.  Senior designated hitter Jackson Shaver and freshman Charley Gould each finished the contest with a run batted in.  Capping the offensive outburst was senior center fielder Ryan Brown, who ended the day with two hits and three runs scored.

Sophomore LHP Jason Inghram picked up his seventh win of the season after pitching seven innings in which he allowed no runs on just four hits.  In 24 batters faced, the Chesapeake, Va., native tallied five strikeouts while not surrendering a single walk.   In relief appearances, freshman J.T. Castner worked a scoreless eighth, while junior John Sheehan recorded the last three outs in the ninth.

For the second consecutive day the Green and Gold got off to a strong start as it plated three runs in the first inning.  Highlighting the frame was Lindemuth's roped single into left field, which plated Brown and Shaw as W&M jumped out to the 2-0 lead.

The Tribe took control of the contest with a four-spot in the bottom of the second, which extended its advantage to 7-0.  With one out and the bases loaded, Katz cleared the bases with a slicing triple down the right field chalk as the Tribe led by the count of 6-0.  Lindemuth pushed across W&M's seventh run of the day with a sacrifice fly out to center field which plated a tagging Katz from third.

W&M tacked on another run in the fourth before scoring a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, as it owned a 12-0 cushion after six innings of play.

In the bottom of the seventh, Gould's single to right field pushed across Shaw for W&M's 13th run of the afternoon.  Sarty followed and made the final tally 14-0 after his single through the right side drove in junior Bobby Klein.

Over the course of the weekend, the Green and Gold's pitching staff held the Hofstra offense to just one run scored in 27.0 innings of action.  W&M held the Pride bats to an average of .167, while it allowed only 15 hits to go along with 24 strikeouts and just four walks.   Offensively, the Green and Gold batted .364 over the three-game set as it connected on 40 hits, which included five doubles, one triple and one home run.  Of the Tribe's 26 runs scored, 25 were accounted for with RBIs.

Tribe baseball returns to action on Thursday as it opens up a three-game set at CAA foe UNCW.  The action gets underway from Brooks Field in Wilmington, N.C., at 6 p.m. and fans can follow the action online at TribeAthletics.com with live audio and stats.
