RICHMOND, Va. - For the third straight week, William and Mary men's basketball freshman
Omar Prewitt was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Prewitt helped the Tribe push its winning streak to three games by averaging 23 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in wins over VMI and Howard, while shooting 50 percent from the floor, 58.2 percent from 3-point range and 88.2 percent from the free throw line.
During each game of the week, Prewitt bettered his career high, scoring over 20 points per game. He became the first Tribe freshman since 2005 to score 20 or more points in back-to-back games. The Mount Sterling, Ky., native poured in 22 points in the Tribe's 97-67 route of VMI on Nov. 27. Prewitt canned 5-of-7 from 3-point range, the second most 3-pointers for a W&M freshman in program history, and added six rebounds.
In the Tribe's 84-79 overtime victory over Howard, Prewitt bettered his career-high once again with 24 points on 5-of-10 from the field, including a 2-of-5 effort from 3-point range, and 12-of-13 from the free throw line. He saved his best for the overtime period, scoring 10 of the Tribe's 13 points in propelling the Green and Gold to its third straight victory.
On the year, Prewitt ranks among the CAA leaders in 10 different categories, while leading league rookies in eight statistical categories, including scoring, rebounding and assists. He is second in the CAA in 3-point percentage (.472), third in 3-pointers made (2.4), sixth in steals (1.3), seventh in field goal percentage (47.8), eight in scoring (15.9), 11th in assists (2.4), free throw percentage (.757) and blocked shots (0.9), 14th in defensive rebounding (4.1) and 17th in rebounding (5.7).
Prewitt and the Tribe carry a three-game winning streak into a home tilt with rival Richmond on Wednesday, Dec. 4, night. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Kaplan Arena, and the game will mark the second-annual Shoeless Showdown presented by C&F Bank and Chick-Fil-a. Any fan that brings a new pair of shoes to donate will receive free admission to the contest between the Tribe and Spiders. A new shoe donation will also give fans a coupon for a free Chick-fil-a sandwich, a $10 coupon toward a new C&F Bank checking account and a free ticket to either the Tribe's upcoming home games against Goucher (Dec. 20) or Old Dominion (Jan. 1). All shoes will be donated to the local Williamsburg Salvation Army.
