Williamsburg, Va. - William and Mary
women's tennis head coach Meredith Geiger-Walton was recently inducted in the
USTA Oklahoma District Tennis Association Hall of Fame. Each year the
ODTA recognizes individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions
to Oklahoma tennis. This year's event was held at the Jim Thorpe
Association Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. Geiger-Walton was
joined in the 2011 Hall of Fame Class by Mark Johnson, Glen Mullins, Janet
Thomas Griffith and Betsy, Joe, and Rob Braver.
In junior tennis, Geiger-Walton was constantly ranked No. 1 in the state of Oklahoma in both singles and doubles. By age 11, her No. 1 ranking continued in the Missouri Valley Section, and she was ranked No. 1 nationally in doubles for several years. Geiger-Walton did not lose a high school match in either singles or doubles during her four-year prep career at Casady High School in Oklahoma City, Okla. She played collegiately at Arizona State where she was an All-American as a senior after earning All-Pac 10 in 1994 and 1995.
Geiger-Walton is in her fourth season at the helm of the Tribe program. Last season, she guided the Green and Gold to the program's 21st CAA Championship and its 18th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. For the 15th time in school history, the Tribe had a representative at each of the three NCAA Championship events (team, singles and doubles) in 2011. Geiger-Walton mentored a trio of NCAA Individual Championship qualifiers last season in Jeltje Loomans (singles), Anik Cepeda (doubles) and Hope Johnson (doubles). W&M finish her third season at No. 44 nationally and garnered six All-CAA honorees, including all three doubles teams.
Prior to her time at W&M, Geiger-Walton was the Director of Tennis for the St. Stephen's Junior Tennis Academy after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Texas. She is a Certified USTA High Performance Coach and was named the USPTA/Texas Touring Coach of the Year in 2007.
