WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William and Mary senior RHP Matt Davenport was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 34th (1054th overall) round of the 2012 MLB draft Wednesday afternoon.  Davenport, who was named the 2012 CAA Pitcher of the Year, becomes the 21st player drafted into the majors out of the College since 1999.  Along with being named the CAA Pitcher of the Year, the Chesapeake, Va., native garnered first-team all-conference accolades this season.

Davenport concluded his finest season in a Green and Gold uniform with a record of 7-5 and an ERA of 1.73.  For the year, he struck out 90 batters in 109.1 innings pitched, while holding the opposition to a batting average of .210.  In all, Davenport finished the season ranking first in the CAA in ERA, opposition batting average, innings pitched and strikeouts.  Davenport draws the curtain shut on an impressive career as he ranks second all-time in the W&M record books with an ERA of 3.26 and innings pitched (336.2).

In 2012, Davenport earned the CAA Pitcher of the Week distinction twice, as he posted victories over James Madison (March 16) and Hofstra (May 18) in the weeks that were.  Against JMU, Davenport limited the Dukes to just two hits as he finished off the, 5-0, complete-game shutout with eight strikeouts.  In his final start in a Green and Gold uniform, he silenced the CAA's most potent hitting squad in Hofstra.  Against the Pride, Davenport struck out a career-high 12 batters and held Hofstra to just five hits as he went the distance in the, 12-0, victory.
