Competing Friday evening in Irajuato, Mexico, William and Mary's Brandon Heroux '12 threw the javelin 70.02m (229-8) to finish fourth at the NACAC U-23 Championships. The three-day meet is open to athletes between the ages of 20-22 from North America, Central America, and the Carribean. Heroux, throwing for Canada, is the second Tribe athlete to compete at the meet alongside Harry Miller '09 who ran the 3,000m steeplechase for the U.S. in 2008.
Heroux's fourth-place throw was just about six inches away from the bronze medal, and was the seventh-longest throw in school history and of his career. Of those seven, five have come just this season, all in the past three months. Highlights of Heroux's 2012 campaign including taking sixth at the Canadian Olympic Trials last week, and finishing eighth at the NCAA Championships in early June to become the first throwing All-American in W&M men's track history. He also won his fourth-consecutive Colonial Athletic Association title with a meet-record throw, and broke his own school record at the NCAA Championships with a toss of 73.55m (241-3).
Heroux graduated in May with a degree in finance, and has also been honored several times for his academic achievements. A member of the USTFCCCA All-Academic team, Heroux was also named the Men's Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the CAA for the second time (also in 2010), and was voted by the league schools as the overall Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year as well.
