BLACKSBURG, Va. - For the second
straight season, William and Mary women's tennis juniors Jeltje Loomans and
Maria Belaya advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Atlantic Region Doubles
Championship on Monday morning. The semifinals and championship match of the
main doubles draw will be on Tuesday at the Burrows-Burelson Tennis Center.
Belaya and Loomans, who are seeded No. 3 at the regional event, upended Virginia Tech's Raluca Mita and Kelly Williford, who was a 9-16 seed, in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (3), to remain perfect on the season. The duo is 6-0 with its trio of wins at the region championship and will meet the No. 2-seeded Virginia pair of Stephanie Nauta and Li Xi, who is also ranked No. 41 nationally, in the semifinals on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. The championship doubles match will follow the championship singles tilt.
The Tribe pair of senior Anik Cepeda and freshman Leeza Nemchinov saw its run at the ITA Atlantic Region Championship come to a close in the quarterfinals on Monday morning. After upsets the No. 5 seed in the round of 16, Cepeda and Nemchinov fell to the No. 4-seeded Marshall team of Maria Voscekova and Dominika Zaprazna, 8-5. The Tribe pair dropped to 4-2 on the season following the setback.
W&M was one of only two teams, along with Virginia, in the Atlantic Region to advance two doubles teams to the quarterfinals. Virginia Tech is the host of the ITA Atlantic Region Championship, which runs through Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the Burrows-Burelson Tennis Center. The singles and doubles winners of the ITA Atlantic Regional will earn a spot in the exclusion USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 8-11. The National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship is the second fall national championship event in college tennis and includes a 32-player singles draw and 20-team doubles bracket for both men and women.
