W&M Field Hockey Adds Four Incoming Freshmen to Roster

William and Mary head field hockey coach Peel Hawthorne '80 today announced the addition of four incoming freshmen to the Tribe team this fall.  The first four members of the College's class of 2016 include three field players and one goalkeeper, hailing from Virginia and North Carolina.

"We look forward to welcoming these outstanding student-athletes to the Tribe," said Hawthorne.  "We have watched them play for years and are happy to finally see them matriculate as freshmen!   They will make an immediate positive impact on Tribe hockey."

Following is a brief look at each newcomer:

Esty Byrd - 5-5 Midfield
Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day

"Esty is one of North Carolina’s premier players.  She is fun to watch and coach, and has a strong physical presence on the field. She is a fierce competitor with exceptional heart and determination."

Prep: Was a two-time all-state honoree at Charlotte Country Day ... Also twice named a NC All-Star (all divisions, public and private) ... Selected to the NFHCA South Region team in 2011 ... Won gold at the 2010 AAU Junior Olympics ... Named to the Carolina Weekly Super Team first-team three times ... Also a three-time all-conference honoree ... Captain and Defensive Player of the Year for CCDS as a senior ... Volunteer in the Surgical Waiting Room at the Carolina's Medical Center ... Also volunteers with the Special Olympics and Crisis Assistance Ministries ... Honor roll student.

Personal: Daughter of Lindsey Emory and Tom Byrd ... Father played soccer at Brevard College for two years ... Enjoys fishing, riding dirt bikes, and hiking ... Plans to major in biology at the College, with an eye towards med school.

Maddy Moore - 5-3 Midfield
Norfolk, Va./Maury

"Maddy ‘s speed, tenacity and ability to communicate on the field will be immediately evident.  She is a hard worker who is just starting to tap into her potential.  She has great vision and versatility, and she is very coachable."

Prep: Named Player of the Year in the Eastern District as a senior ... Also earned first-team all-region honors in 2011 ... Named to the Virginian Pilot's All-Tidewater team ... Three times a member of the all-district first team ... Dished out 11 assists in her senior campaign, while also scoring three goals ... Member of the Governor's Foreign Language Academy in 2011, studying Spanish ... Member of the Future Educators of America ... Also a member of the National Honors Society and the Spanish National Honors Society.

Personal: Daughter of Jessica Moore and Jody Staylor ... Father wrestled at North Carolina and Old Dominion ... Enjoys photography, music, reading, and gardening ... Plans to major in Latin American studies.

Meredith Savage - 5-6 Goalkeeper
Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne

"Meredith was raised to be a goalkeeper as both her older and younger sisters are keepers also.  She brings considerable experience to the Tribe.  She knows the game and has the skills and the mind set to make a smooth transition to the college level."

Prep: Chosen to the Futures Elite and FDIC programs each of the last two years ... Named to all-tournament team at the 2010 AAU Junior Olympics ... 2010 NFHCA All-South Region honoree ... Allowed the fewest goals per game in her age group at the 2010 National Indoor Tournament ... Won gold in Pool C at the 2011 National Indoor Tournament ... Twice named to the Beach District first-team ... Second-team all-region as a junior ... In 2011, was selected the Mid-Atlantic training squad at the Jr. High Performance Center ... Honor Roll all four years ... National Math Honor Society and National French Honor Society ... Volunteered her time coaching middle school field hockey and indoor soccer.

Personal: Daughter of Jacquelyn and Michael Savage ... Sister, Margo, was a goalkeeper at James Madison ... Aunt, Julie Savage Hardesty, earned her MBA from William and Mary in 1993 ... Enjoys sewing, reading, and being outdoors ... Plans to major in neuroscience.

Peyton Smith - 5-9 Defender
Richmond, Va./St. Catherine's School

"Peyton is a very steady, consistent presence in the backfield.  She reads the play well and uses her strengths as a passer to set up the transition game out of defense.  She has good vision and is very poised under pressure."

Prep: Captained St. Catherine's to back-to-back state titles in 2010 and 2011 ... Named first-team all-state as a senior, after earning second-team honors as a junior ... All-league selection in 2010 and 2011 as well ... Named second-team All-Met by the Richmond Times-Dispatch following each championship run ... Participated in the National Futures Tournament each of the past two summers ... Also captained the lacrosse team.

Personal: Daughter of Blair and Harvard Smith ... Father played football at Hampden-Sydney ... Enjoys golf and photography ... Plans to major in environmental geology.
