WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary baseball team will play a pair of mid-week games before hosting CAA foe Delaware this upcoming weekend. On Tuesday, W&M will host Maryland-Eastern Shore at Plumeri Park in a 7 p.m. tilt. The following day, the College will travel to Farmville, Va., to play the Longwood Lancers in a 6 p.m. affair at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium. Scouting the Tribe
The Tribe enters its mid-week games with an overall record of 19-11. This past week, the Green and Gold tallied a record of 3-1, which included a victory at Richmond and two wins against its CAA counterpart Towson. For the week, the College outscored the Spiders and Tigers by a combined score of 37-11.
Sophomore third baseman Ryan Lindemuth is batting .333 with three home runs, 24 RBIs and 12 stolen bases to lead the W&M bats. Senior left fielder Tadd Bower has also tallied an average of .333. The Chesterfield, Va., native has notched 16 RBIs and two home runs on the year. Junior center fielder Ryan Brown owns a .324 average to go along with 11 RBIs and 10 stolen bases, while classmate second baseman Kevin Nutter is batting .324 with four RBIs and four doubles.
On the mound, senior RHP Matt Davenport (4-2) spearheads a stout W&M rotation. In his 59.0 innings pitched, the Chesapeake, Va., native owns an ERA of 1.37 and has held the opposing bats to a .171 average. Junior RHP Brett Koehler (4-0) has compiled an ERA of 1.80 in his 25.0 innings pitched this season. On Sunday, the junior hurler notched win number four, as he held Towson to just one earned run over six innings of work. Senior LHP Cole Shain (2-2) boasts an ERA of 3.81 in 28.1 innings of action. His two wins this season have come against NYIT and George Mason. Freshman Jason Inghram (1-2) has worked 21.1 innings in seven appearances this spring, and has recorded 17 strikeouts.
Scouting the Hawks
Under the direction of sixth-year head coach Will Gardner, Maryland-Eastern Shore travels to Plumeri Park with a record of 5-22. This past weekend, the Hawks swept MEAC foe Coppin State in a three-game set in Glen Burnie, Md.
At the plate, senior James Newsome is batting .306 with 12 RBIs and two home runs to lead the UMES attack. Junior Tre-von Johnson owns an average of .296 and has tallied 10 RBIs on the season. Sophomore Bryon Campbell rounds out the UMES offensive output with 11 RBIs and 13 runs scored on a .278 average.
Sophomore RHP Zachery Saca (1-2) headlines the UMES staff. For the year, Saca has recorded 18 strikeouts in 33.0 innings of action. Projected starter RHP Alex Welch (0-1) enters Tuesday's affair with seven appearances and two starts under his belt this season.
The UMES Series
All-time, the College owns a 4-0 series lead over the Hawks. The last time UMES and W&M met was during the 2010 season when the Green and Gold swept the Hawks in a three-game set during the opening weekend.
Scouting the Lancers
Head coach Buddy Bolding is in his 34th season at the helm of the Longwood program, compiling a record of 900-495-4 during his tenure. Fresh off a three-game sweep of UMBC this past weekend, the Lancers entertain the Tribe with a record of 15-14. Through its 29 games, Longwood has three common opponents with the College. LU notched wins over Norfolk State (2) and George Mason but fell to James Madison.
Freshman LHP Brandon Vick has been effective on the bump for the Lancers. In his 30.2 innings of work, the southpaw has surrendered only 10 earned runs, earning an ERA of 2.93. Projected starter senior RHP Matt Gwaltney (0-3) owns an ERA of 3.43 and has tallied 28 strikeouts in 44.2 innings of action.
Junior Justin Lacy leads LU at the plate with an average of .416. The Glen Allen, Va., native has notched 20 RBIs and three home runs on the year. Senior Bobby Newman checks in with a .392 average to go along with a team-high 28 RBIs. Sophomore Scott Burkett is batting .345 with 16 RBIs and two home runs to round out the LU output.
The Longwood Series
W&M leads the overall series with Longwood 12-5, but the Lancers have won the previous three meetings against the College. Last season, LU won all three meetings against the College, including wins of 4-2 and 4-1 in Farmville.
