WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary women's tennis team continued to demonstrate why Tribe Athletics personifies the term student-athlete as it raked in national academic awards from the ITA. The program earned its fourth ITA All-Academic Team award, including the second straight season, while having five players earn ITA Scholar-Athlete distinction.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program with a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).

The Tribe was one of 112 teams nationally, one of just three CAA programs and one of just four from the State of Virginia to receive the ITA All-Academic Team award in 2011-12. The Tribe's five ITA Scholar-Athlete honorees were tops among CAA teams and schools in the state of Virginia. Recent graduate Katie Kargl and rising juniors Hope Johnson and Sydney Smith earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors for the second straight season, while senior to be Anik Cepeda garnered her first award.
