The William and Mary men’s golf team was honored recently as one of the top-achieving academic teams in the nation last year, ranking as one of just 15 programs from every division (NCAA I, II, III, NAIA, NJCAA I, II) to achieve a team GPA of 3.50 or greater in 2011-12. The Tribe earned President’s Special Recognition from the Golf Coaches Association of America, who honored a total of 124 teams who had team GPAs of greater than 3.0 last year.
“I am fortunate to coach a group of athletes that is dedicated to excellence on the golf course and in the classroom,” said Director of Golf Jay Albaugh. “To be one of the top academic programs in the country is a special honor and achievement for our players.”
W&M returns the top nine players from last year’s squad and 11 of 12 overall off of the team that finished sixth at the CAA Championship. In the space of a year, the Tribe has also gone from one of the youngest teams in the nation (nine freshmen and sophomores) to one of the most experienced (only three underclassmen). Among the returnees is two-time all-conference honoree Jeremy Wells (Hopewell, Va.), a senior who ranks among W&M’s all-time top-10 players.
