Scouting the Tribe
William and Mary improved its record 3-4 on the season, after going 2-1 and taking second at the Tribe Invitational last weekend. The offense is being ably led by redshirt-sophomore Paulette Grand Pre (Laguna Beach, Calif.) with 2.6 kills and 2.88 points per set, while senior captain Molly Krull (Raleigh, N.C.) is dishing out more than seven assists per set. On the defensive half of the floor, senior Shaylin O'Connell (Leesburg, Va.) is leading the Tribe with 0.96 blocks per set, and redshirt-sophomore Devin Andrews-Lyssy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) has 3.8 digs per set to boost W&M to a league-leading team total of 17.7 digs per set.
Scouting the Blue Demons
Central Connecticut State is also 3-4 this year, counting wins over Hartford, St. Francis (Pa.), and Holy Cross. Emily Cochran's 3.73 kills per set leads the team offensively, while Brittany Schumacher has 4.36 digs per set on defense.
Scouting the Crusaders
Holy Cross enters the weekend at 0-6. Megan Lynch is the offensive leader at 2.79 kills per set, while senior Emily Watters' 3.42 digs per set has her closing rapidly on 1,000 digs in her career.
Scouting the Wildcats
New Hampshire has amassed a 2-5 record so far this season, including 3-0 sweeps of Robert Morris and Iona. Junior Morgan Thatcher is scoring 3.79 kills per set, and senior libero is averaging a very good 5.26 digs per set on the other side of the net.
The Series
Somewhat astonishingly, given the number of matches W&M has played since 1975 (1,184), the Tribe has never played any of its three opponents this weekend.
News and Notes
- Following her strong effort last week, freshman middle Carolyn Albright was named the CAA's Rookie of the Week on Tuesday. The Raleigh, N.C., native averaged 1.86 kills and 0.86 blocks per set in the Tribe's four matches, including a 10-kill, four-block night against Liberty on Aug. 28.
- Each of the Tribe's first three victories have come by a 3-1 count, the first time that each of the first three wins have seen the same score since 2000. That season, W&M's first four wins all came by a 3-0 count. Other identical starts include 1994 (three of 3-0), 1988 (five of 3-0), 1985 (three of 3-0), 1981 (four of 2-0), and 1975 (three of 2-0).
- W&M had two players named to all-tournament team at the Tribe Invitational last weekend, with Paulette Grand Pre and Shaylin O'Connell taking their spots among the tournament's six best players. Grand Pre tied for fourth among all players with 0.33 aces per set, and also ranked sixth in kills, points, and digs per set. O'Connell earned her second all-tournament nod of the season after ranking second on the weekend with 1.33 blocks per set, and third with a .448 attack percentage.
- O'Connell was also named to the all-tournament team at the Duke Invitational on the opening weekend, after averaging 2.50 points per set and playing every set in the middle for the Tribe. The Leesburg, Va. native collected more than two kills per set and 0.82 blocks per set in the Tribe's three matches in Durham.
- O'Connell checks in on three straight notes this week, after her nigh-unbelieveable stat lines at the Tribe Invitational. In addition to providing eight blocks against Campbell and seven against Georgetown, she was also incredible on the offensive side of the net. Through the Tribe's first two matches, O'Connell had 22 kills and zero errors, while hitting .458 against Campbell and .524 against Manhattan.
- It's entirely coincedental, but W&M will play in both Durham, North Carolina, and Durham, New Hampshire this season.
- W&M's recruiting class earned mention from PrepVolleyball.com for the third year in a row this summer, and was one of the five best classes mentioned in the region.
- Senior Molly Krull spent the summer in Budapest, Hungary, on a study abroad program through W&M's School of Business.
- Junior Julia Swalchick also spent her summer overseas, studying environmental science in Iceland. Swalchick was also the volleyball team's representative in this year's "Touting the Tribe" video series.
