The William and Mary volleyball team closed its weekend at the Holly Young Invitational on a high note, rallying to beat New Hampshire 3-2.  With the win, the Tribe evens its record at 5-5 on the year, while the Wildcats fall to 4-6 overall.

Box Score

The College had three players earn double-doubles on the night, led by senior Shaylin O'Connell's (Leesburg, Va.) rare kills-blocks combo.  The kinesiology major had 10 kills on the offensive end, and added 10 blocks on the other side of the night.  Sophomores Manon Murray (Greensboro, N.C.) and Paulette Grand Pre (Laguna Beach, Calif.) each earned spots on the all-tournament team after their efforts.  Murray had 11 kills and 13 digs, and also had the sixth-most service aces ever in a 5-set match with four of them against the Wildcats.  Grand Pre tied for the team lead with 12 kills, and also had a team-best 16 digs and five blocks as well.

Also of note, freshman Dessi Koleva (Torrance, Calif.) matched Grand Pre with 12 kills while hitting a robust .421.  She also had six digs and three blocks.  Sophomore Carolina Rivas (Orlando, Fla.) carried the biggest load on the setting end with 33 assists, and also had eight digs and an ace.  Senior Molly Krull (Raleigh, N.C.) nearly reached a double-double herself despite more limited action, with 10 assists and nine digs.  Redshirt-sophomore Devin Andrews-Lyssy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) had 11 digs, as did junior Celine Alasomuka (Centreville, Va.).

New Hampshire started the match with a strong push at the end of the first set, taking a 1-0 lead with a 25-22 victory.  W&M responded immediately, however, jumping out to an 8-3 lead in the second set on an ace from Rivas and hanging on all the way to a 25-19 win.  The Tribe won seven of the last nine points in the set, including two of Murray's service aces to finish things out.  W&M won the third set as well, 25-23, after building out to a big lead midway through the set at 18-11, and outlasted the Wildcats to go up 2-1 in the match.

In the fourth set, New Hampshire went out fast early and held the 17-11 lead, but the Tribe fought back with an 10-4 run that included four kills from Koleva and tied the match at 21-21.  W&M kept plugging away, but the Wildcats were able to win in extra-points, 26-24, and force the fifth set.  That fifth set was all Tribe, however, jumping out to a 9-4 lead.  UNH tried to climb back into it with four points in a row, but O'Connell quickly stuffed them with two blocks (the second alongside Koleva), and she also put the finishing point on the 15-9 win with her tenth kill of the night.

William and Mary returns home next weekend for the final tournament of the year, hosting the Colonial Challenge on Friday and Saturday.  The Tribe will take on Elon Friday night at 7 p.m., before facing Howard on Saturday morning and Hampton that night.
