Tribe Impressive on Opening Day of the UVa Fall Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The William and Mary men's tennis team turned in an impressive performance on the opening day of the UVa Fall Classic as the Green and Gold won 10 of its 14 singles matches, while going a perfect 4-0 in doubles competition. Senior Anton Andersson and juniors Ben Guthrie and John Banks highlighted the Tribe effort, winning two singles matches to earn a spot in the semifinals of their respective flights.

In the Blue Singles Draw, Andersson rallied for a three-set victory in his first round match against ETSU's Ricardo Padon. After the Buccaneer player claimed the opening set, 6-2, the Tribe senior bounced back to take each of the final two sets in tiebreakers in recording his first triumph of the 2012 fall campaign. In the quarterfinals, Andersson upset the bracket's No. 3 seed Jesse Feder of Richmond, 7-5, 6-3. He will face N.C. Wesleyan's Robert Kjellberg, who is the flight's No. 2 seed, at 9 a.m. in the semifinals.

Guthrie, who was the No. 1 seed in the Gold Singles Draw, needed three sets, but downed Elliot Hureau of Binghamton, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, in the first round. In his second match of the day, the Tribe junior disposed of Coastal Carolina's Ted Nilsson, 6-1, 6-2, to secure a spot in the semifinals. Guthrie ran his win streak to three matches in improving to 3-2. He will face the flight's No. 4 seed in Virginia's Jonny Cornish on Saturday at 10:15 a.m.

Banks opened play with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Penn State's C.J. Griffin in the opening round of Red Singles Draw. The Tribe junior went three sets in his quarterfinal tilt, but outlasted the Flight's No. 4 seed Trpimir Kujundzic of Virginia Tech, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Banks is slated to meet Coastal Carolina's Garik Yedigarian in the semifinals at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Junior Ben Hoogland, sophomores Will Juggins and Aaron Chaffee and freshman Scott Huang each claimed one singles victory on Friday. Competing in the Red Singles Flight, Chaffee recorded his first win as a member of the Tribe in the consolation side. The DePaul transfer upended Norfolk State's Igor Broga, 6-3, 6-4, and will face College of Charleston's Billy Kenny in the consolation semifinals at 11:45 a.m.

Hoogland and Juggins each notched wins in the Orange Singles Flight. Hoogland dropped his opening round match before rebounding by not dropping a game in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Norfolk State's Peter Pello. He will face Dylan McCloskey of VCU in the consolation semifinals at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Juggins notched a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over Coastal Carolina's Matias Di Pasquale. He fell in the quarterfinals and will face College of Charleston's Zach Lewis at 9 a.m.

Huang won his first collegiate match in the opening round of the White Singles Draw. The Burke, Va., native rolled past Richard King of Morgan State, 6-1, 6-0, before falling to No. 49-ranked Justin Shane of Virginia. Huang will face Virginia Tech's Marko Lovrinovic at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

In the White Doubles Draw, Banks and Chaffee outlasted the Virginia Tech team of Kujundzic/Lovrinovic, 8-6. Senior Adrian Vodislav and Hoogland dominated Ward and Ward of Morgan State, 8-2, in the Black Doubles Flight, while Guthrie and Huang bounced the VCU duo of McCloskey and Pare, 8-2, in the Red Doubles Draw. Andersson and Juggins upset the No. 1 seed in the Gold Doubles Draw, Kusuda and Nilsson of Coastal Carolina, 8-5. The semifinals of each doubles flight is slated for a 2 p.m. start on Saturday with the championship and third-place matches to follow at 3:15 p.m.

The UVa Fall Classic continues on Saturday with one round of singles, beginning at 9 a.m. The final two rounds of doubles will follow at 2 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. The event is being held at the Snyder Tennis Center and admission is free.
