Women's Tennis Continues Action at the Tribe Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary women's tennis team continued action at the 20th annual Tribe Invitational on Saturday. The Green and Gold closed out the second day of competition winning four singles matches and a pair of doubles contests.

In doubles action, senior Anik Cepeda and freshman Leeza Nemchinov advanced to the championship match of the Karen van der Merwe Doubles Flight, following an 8-5 victory over the Penn duo of Stephanie Do and Jaime Yapp-Shing. The Green and Gold tandem could not maintain the momentum though, falling to VCU's Daria Yakauleva and Olga Terteac, 9-7, in the title match. Cepeda and Nemchinov finished the Tribe Invite with a  2-1 doubles ledger.

Juniors Maria Belaya and Sydney Smith registered their first doubles win as a tandem with a victory in the consolation side of the Katrin Guenther Doubles Flight. The Tribe duo rolled to an 8-2 victory over the Penn team of Alex Ion and Emma Whitfield.

Junior Hope Johnson and Nemchinov each tallied their third singles wins of the season in the consolation side of the Lauren Nikolaus Singles Flight. Nemchinov evened her fall ledger with a 6-1, 7-6 (5) victory over Ivana Vukovic of Old Dominion. Johnson rallied for a three-set victory over Penn's Srinidhi Raghavan. After the Quaker player won the opening set, 6-3, the Tribe junior bounced back to even things with a 6-3 victory in the second. The third set went to a tiebreaker, before Johnson pulled out the 7-6 (6) triumph.

In the the Kristine Kurth Singles Flight, Smith and senior Nina Vulovich both recorded consolation singles victories. Vulovich made quick work of Norfolk State's Andrea Macchiavello, 6-1, 6-1, for her third victory of the season. Smith notched her team-leading fourth singles win of the season, downing Penn's Emma Whitfield, 6-0, 6-4.

The Green and Gold will wrap up play at the Tribe Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 7. The final day of competition will include one round of singles, beginning at 9 a.m. The event will be held at the Millie West Tennis Facility, the Common Caf Courts and the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on Sunday.
