In its previewing
series, 'Touting the Tribe,' TribeAthletics.com gives fans a glance at William
and Mary student-athletes to keep an eye on during the upcoming 2012-13 season.
The Tribe athlete featured today today is junior swimmer Sara Shaner of the
Green and Gold women's swim team.
A sprint freestyler, Shaner enters the second half of her career as the Tribe's top returning scorer and a two-time All-CAA performer. In 2011-12, she scored 291.5 points with 12 victories, and swam on the 200 and 400 free relays that took third at the CAA Championships. She also swam the anchor on the Tribe's 200 medley relay that broke the school record in 1:42.39 at the conference meet, and finished seventh individually in the 100 free and ninth in the 50 free.
Over the last two years, Shaner's 531.75 points accumulated for the Tribe is the second-most by all swimmers (current and graduated), and the best among all returning athletes by a significant margin. She ranks third all-time at the College in the 100 free and fourth in the 50 free, and her name appears on 14 relays across all five team events in the record books. Shaner has won 17 races, with 13 more runner-up showings and 13 bronze medals as well.
Shaner and her teammates will host their first home meet of the 2012-13 season this weekend at the Rec Center Pool. The Tribe will welcome Mary Washington on Friday afternoon, beginning at 5 p.m.
