Men's Tennis Opens Play at ITA Atlantic Regional

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The William and Mary men's tennis team opened play at the ITA Atlantic Region Championships on Friday. The Green and Gold advanced a trio of players in the main singles draw, while the Tribe tandem of senior Jamie Whiteford and junior Ben Guthrie garnered a spot in the second round of the main doubles draw.

Playing together for the first time this fall, Whiteford and Guthrie downed the St. Joseph's pair of Alex Veronis and Jose Sierra, 8-5, in the first round of the main doubles draw. The victory upped Whiteford and Guthrie's career mark as a team to 5-3. The Tribe duo, which is seeded No. 9-16 at the regional event, will face the UMBC team of Daniel Gray and Gaulthier Berret in the second round at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

In the main singles draw, junior John Banks, sophomore Aaron Chaffee and freshman Scott Huang earned first-round victories on Friday. Banks and Chaffee each evened their season singles ledgers at 4-4 as Banks downed George Washington's Leo Lapentti, 6-3, 7-6, while Chaffee upended Bucknell's Kelly Morque, 7-6, 6-3. Huang notched his second singles win of the fall with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tommy Gates of St. Joseph's.

Whiteford and Guthrie both earned first-round byes in the singles flight as a result of being seeded. Guthrie, a No. 17-32 seed, will face Virginia Tech's Aaron Gomez in the second round at 9 a.m. With a victory, Guthrie's third round contest on Saturday would start at 12:30 p.m. Whiteford, who is the defending Atlantic Region Singles Champion, is the event's No. 2 seed and will face Richmond's Sebastien Fauchet at 10:45 a.m. The victor advances to a third-round match at 2:15 p.m.

Banks and Chaffee will both play in the second round at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Banks faces No. 17-32 seed Claes Goransson of VCU, while Chaffee meets Virginia Tech's No. 9 seed Andreas Bjerrehus. Both Banks and Chaffee's potential third-round match on Saturday would be at 12:30 p.m. Huang meets No. 13 seeded Carlos Lopez-Villa of Old Dominion at 11:45 a.m. with the winner advancing to a 3 p.m. third-round match-up.

The University of Virginia is the host of the ITA Atlantic Region Championships at the Snyder Tennis Center and Boar's Head Tennis Facility in Charlottesville. The event will run through Monday, Oct. 22.
