Whiteford, Guthrie Advance at ITA Atlantic Region Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Senior Jamie Whiteford and junior Ben Guthrie advanced in both singles and doubles for the William and Mary men's tennis team at the ITA Atlantic Region Championships on Saturday. Whiteford and Guthrie combined to advance to the round of 16 in doubles, while they each won two singles matches to advance to the round of 16 individually as well.

In doubles, Guthrie and Whiteford won their second match in as many days this time in dominating fashion, 8-0, over the UMBC team of Daniel Gray and Gaulthier Berret to advance to the third round. The No. 9-16-seeded Tribe twosome will compete in the Round of 16 on Sunday, not before 1 p.m. with the quarterfinals set for later in the day at 2:45 p.m.

Whiteford, who is seeded No. 2 and ranked No. 43 nationally, won in straight sets over Richmond's Sebastien Fachet, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round on Saturday. Whiteford's second match of the day went three sets with the reigning Atlantic Region champion pulling out a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 win over Albert Ochagavia of Old Dominion, who was a No. 17-32 seed. Whiteford evened his season singles ledger at 3-3 with the pair of victories and will face No. 17-32 seed Alejandro Argente of VCU at 10:30 a.m. in the round of 16 on Sunday.

Guthrie picked up a pair of singles wins in the main draw as well to run his season ledger to 5-3. After downing Virginia Tech's Aaron Gomez, 6-4, 6-3, in the second round, the Tribe junior needed three sets in outlasting No. 15 seeded Danil Zelenkov of George Washington. Guthrie, who is a No. 17-32 seed, took the opening set from his Colonial opponent, 6-3, before Zelenkov took the second set, 6-2. Guthrie gutted out a tiebreaker win, 7-6 (5), in the third to advance to the round of 16 on Sunday. He will face No. 3 seeded Justin Shane of Virginia, who is ranked No. 49 nationally, at 10:30 a.m.

The University of Virginia is the host of the ITA Atlantic Region Championships, which will run through Monday, Oct. 22, at the Snyder Tennis Center. The singles and doubles winners of the ITA Atlantic Regional will earn a spot in the exclusion USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 8-11. The National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship is the second fall national championship event in college tennis and includes a 32-player singles draw and 20-team doubles bracket for both men and women.
