Ben Guthrie Upsets National Top 50 Foe, Advances to Region Quarterfinals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - William and Mary men's tennis junior Ben Guthrie upset a top 50 national opponent on his way to the quarterfinals of the ITA Atlantic Region Singles Championship on Sunday afternoon. Along with Guthrie's individual quarterfinal performance, he and senior Jamie Whiteford advance to the quarterfinals of the regional doubles championship on Sunday as well. The University of Virginia is the host of the ITA Atlantic Region Championships at the Snyder Tennis Center.

For the second time this season, Guthrie tallied a straight sets win over a national top-65 opponent. This time, he upended the No. 49-ranked Justin Shane of Virginia, who was seeded No. 3 in the event, 7-6 (3), 6-2, to earn a spot in the regional quarterfinal. The win upped Guthrie's season mark to 6-3, and he will meet the No. 9 seed Andreas Bjerrehus of Virginia Tech at 10 a.m. on Monday. The winner will garner a spot in the regional semifinal against either No. 1-seeded Jarmere Jenkins of Virginia, who is ranked No. 2 nationally, or VCU's Max Wennakoski, who is seeded No. 5 and ranked No. 80 nationally, at 1:30 p.m. The ITA Atlantic Region Championship match will be on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

In doubles action, Guthrie and Whiteford opened the day with a convincing 8-1 win over Old Dominion's Wesley Barrett and Tim Schweig in the round of 16. The Tribe duo's run at the ITA Atlantic Region Championship came to a close in the quarterfinals as they fell, 8-4, to No. 2-seeded Justin Shane and Julen Uriguen of Virginia, who are ranked No. 47 nationally. Guthrie and Whiteford are 3-1 on the year.

Whiteford, the event's No. 2 seed, dropped a three-set match in the singles round of 16 on Sunday. The reigning ITA Atlantic Region Champion won the opening set, 6-4, over VCU's Alejandro Argente, who was a 17-32 seed. The Ram player rallied to take the second set, 6-3, and the match with a 6-4 victory in the third.

The singles and doubles winners of the ITA Atlantic Regional will earn a spot in the exclusion USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 8-11. The National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship is the second fall national championship event in college tennis and includes a 32-player singles draw and 20-team doubles bracket for both men and women.
