W&M Women's Golf Opens Sixth at Lady Paladin

The William and Mary women's golf team got back on the course Friday after a long hiatus, and stands in a tie for sixth at the Furman Lady Paladin Intercollegiate after a first-round 312 (+24).  Nova Southeastern, the top-ranked team in Division II, holds a five-stroke lead on the field of 14 teams with its nine-over 297.  Rumbidzai Masamvu of Appalachian State was the only player to break par in the round, and holds  atwo-stroke lead at 71 (-1).

The Tribe has three players ranked among the top-25 with two rounds to go, led by freshman Tina Chang's (Mineola, N.Y.) four-over 76 that has her tied for 12th.  Sophomore Kellie Edelblut (New Hope, Pa.) and senior Betsy Birchall (Mountain Brook, Ala.) both carded 77 on the day, and are tied for 21st overall.  Freshman Alessandra Liu (Cynwyd, Pa.) is tied for 58t after her first-round 82 (+10), and redshirt-junior Katy Hutcherson (Greeneville, Tenn.) rounds out the team effort in a tie for 72nd.  Sophomore Anna McMullen (Monroe, La.) is competing as an individual in the tournament, and is tied for 63rd after her round of 85.

The Lady Paladin Intercollegiate continues through the weekend, with rounds on Saturday and Sunday.
