The William and Mary volleyball team wrapped up a perfect Homecoming Weekend with a 3-0 sweep of George Mason Saturday night, and a game that was moved up a day due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Sandy.  The Tribe improves to 13-10 overall and 5-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the win, while the Patriots fell to 4-18, 2-7 in league play.

Box Score

Redshirt-sophomore Paulette Grand Pre (Laguna Beach, Va.) led all players in the match 11 kills, and nearly had a double-double with nine digs.  Senior Shaylin O'Connell (Leesburg, Va.) had nine kills on a .333 attack and a match-high five blocks, just ahead of freshman Dessi Koleva's (Torrance, Calif.) four blocks.  Koleva also had eight kills, 10 digs, and an ace.  Classmate Olivia Jebb (Cornwall, N.Y.) matched Koleva with a team-best 10 digs, and sophomore Carolina Rivas (Orlando, Fla.) had 13 assists, two aces, and eight blocks.

Also of note, senior captain Molly Krull (Raleigh, N.C.) had 23 assists on the night, and chipped in on a block as well.  Junior captain Alexandra Ciaccio (Houston, Texas) only played in the final set, but she had four kills and no errors on a .500 attack, and also added a block.  Redshirt-sophomore Monika Stanciauskas (Wheaton, Ill.) also hit .500, scoring five kills against no errors, and had a block of her own.

The tone of the evening was set early in the first set, as a Mason serving error and a kill by Stanciauskas ignited a 10-2 run for the Tribe.  That run was promptly followed by another, 7-0, and then a third, 4-0, and suddenly the College had a 25-10 win in its pocket.  The second set was more closely played, and with GMU out in front most of the way until late.  In the space of four points, O'Connell had three kills and combined with Krull for a block, and W&M took its first lead at 20-19.  The teams traded a one-point lead back and forth, until finally a Patriots error put W&M at set-point, 26-25.  Koleva closed out the win with another kill for her tally, and sent the teams into the lockers with W&M ahead 2-0.

Coming back out for the third, the College jumped out in front early, 8-5, before Mason clawed its way back into things.  Control remained with the Tribe, however, as the visitors never lead again after a block from O'Connell and Koleva tied the match at 11-11.  The final tied came at 17-17, but another GMU error was quickly followed by two aces from Rivas and the Tribe would win eight of the final 13 points for the 25-22 victory.

William and Mary is back in action next Friday night, Nov. 2, hosting Northeastern at 7 p.m.  Before the match gets underway, the Tribe will take a moment to honor its two seniors for their four years of hard work and dedication.
