It marks the sixth time in the last seven years that the Green and Gold will compete in the Kitty Harrison Invitational. The event is held in honor of Kitty Harrison, a former head coach of the North Carolina women's tennis team from 1977 to 1998. During her career, she led the Tar Heels to four ACC Championships.
The Tribe will join a 10-team field competing in the event that includes Duke, Marshall, Maryland, Minnesota, Norfolk State, North Carolina, UNC Greensboro, Virginia and Virginia Tech. The Invite is comprised of three 16-player singles draws and three eight-team doubles flights. Competition will get underway on Friday with one round of doubles at 9 a.m., followed by two singles rounds starting at 10:30 a.m. The final two round of doubles will be competed on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. with one round of singles being played on Saturday. Sunday will wrap up competition with singles at 9 a.m.
In doubles action, senior Anik Cepeda and freshman Leeza Nemchinov will compete in the Blue Draw and open with North Carolina duo of Lauren McHale and Tessa Lyons at 9 a.m. on Friday. Junior Sydney Smith and freshman Jackie Lee will face the UNC Greensboro team of Alisha Burton and Amy Ellis at 9 a.m. in the Navy Draw.
Nemchinov is the lone Tribe representative in the Blue Singles Draw and will meet Minnesota's Natalie Pintusava at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. The W&M rookie's second match of the day will be at 1:30 p.m.
Cepeda and junior Hope Johnson will represent the Green and Gold in the White Singles Draw beginning at 10:30 a.m. Johnson faces UNCG's Alex Whitehead, while Cepeda drew Carol Kahoun of Virginia Tech. Both Tribe players' second matches of the day will start at 1:30 p.m.
Smith and Lee will face Virginia Tech's Tea Ivanovic and the Hokies' Emily Lauten, respectively, in the first round of the Navy Singles Draw. Lee's opening match is slated for 10:30 a.m., with her second contest of the day coming at 1:30 p.m. Smith will play her first singles match at noon on Friday, followed by the second tilt at 3 p.m.
