WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Senior Jamie Whiteford highlighted the final day of the
Tribe Invitational for the William and Mary men's tennis team, downing a top 25
nationally ranked opponent on Sunday. Whiteford and junior Ben Guthrie were
named to the Tribe Invitational All-Tournament team in both singles and
doubles, while sophomore Will Juggins joined them on the singles all-tournament
team.
For the second time in the tournament, Whiteford knocked off a nationally-ranked foe, this time dispatching of No. 24-ranked Greg Andrews of Notre Dame, 7-5, 6-4, in the first singles flight. The Tribe senior, who is ranked No. 43 nationally, improved to 6-4 in fall singles action and finished unbeaten in three matches in the top singles flight.
Like the Tribe, Notre Dame placed three singles players and a doubles team on the all-tournament team. Andrews, Blas Moros and Quentin Monaghan were selected to the singles team, while Andrews and Spencer Talmadge were the Irish doubles representative. Old Dominion's Carlos Lopez-Villa and Harvard's Andy Nguyen rounded out the Tribe Invitational All-Tournament singles team. The ODU team of Lopez-Villa and Can Cetinel along with the Harvard pair of Nicky Hu and Andy Nguyen were selected to the all-tournament doubles team.
Senior Adrian Vodislav and junior Ben Hoogland recorded a doubles victory on the final day of the event in the third flight. The Tribe pair downed Monaghan and Wyatt McCoy of Notre Dame, 8-5. Vodislav and Hoogland finished the fall at 2-1 as a duo.
The Tribe Invitational closed out the fall season for the College. W&M returns to action at the Wake Forest Invitational to kick off the spring slate, Jan. 11-14. The Tribe will start dual-match play with a doubleheader at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on Jan. 20 when it welcomes Radford (10 a.m.) and Navy (4 p.m.) to Williamsburg.
