Whiteford, Guthrie in National Rankings

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary men's tennis team placed both a singles player and a doubles team among the Campbell's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Rankings released on Thursday evening. Senior Jamie Whiteford was ranked No. 106 nationally in singles, while he and junior Ben Guthrie were ranked No. 49 nationally in doubles.

Whiteford finished the fall campaign at 6-4, including victories in each of his last three matches. Two of his setbacks came to players currently among the ITA National Rankings, while he also owns a victory over No. 80-ranked Greg Andrews of Notre Dame.

Guthrie and Whiteford compiled a 5-2 ledger, including a 2-2 mark against teams currently among the ITA Top 60. The Tribe pair advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Atlantic Region Doubles Championship during the fall and owns victories over the No. 34-ranked Old Dominion team of Wesley Barrett and Tim Schweig as well as the No. 51-ranked Notre Dame duo of Spencer Talmadge and Andrews. Both Guthrie and Whiteford's losses during the fall came to teams in the national top 25. The Tribe pair fell to the No. 9-ranked Virginia team of Justin Shane and Julen Uriguen along with the No. 23-ranked ODU pair of Carlos Lopez Villa and Can Cetinel.

W&M opens the 2013 campaign at the Wake Forest Invitational, Jan. 11-14. The Tribe will start dual-match play with a doubleheader at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on Jan. 20 when it welcomes Radford (10 a.m.) and Navy (4 p.m.) to Williamsburg.
