In doubles action, junior John Banks and freshman Scott Huang improved to 2-1 at the Invite with a victory on Sunday. The Green and Gold pair upended the Liberty team of Siim Tuus and Stan Vaughn, 8-5, in the consolation doubles draw.
Huang also won his second straight match in the consolation singles draw. The Tribe rookie downed Liberty's Gullem Secanell, 6-2, 6-0, for his fourth win of the season. Junior Ben Hoogland also won for the second straight day of the tournament. In the consolation singles draw, Hoogland dispatched of Liberty's Sergio Mourelo, 6-0, 6-1, to tally his third victory of the year.
Freshman Matt Waddell won for the second time in as many matches with a come-from-behind three-set win in the consolation draw on Sunday. After dropping the opening set to Kennesaw State's Matthew Johnson, 6-4, Waddell drew even with a 6-3 triumph in the second set. He cruised past his Owl counterpart in the third set, 6-1, to start his Green and Gold career at 2-0.
Junior Aaron Chaffee just missed upsetting No. 59 nationally ranked Amogh Prabhakar of Wake Forest in the consolation draw. Chaffee took the opening set from Prabhakar, 6-4, before the Demon Deacon rallied to win the second and third sets, 6-3, 6-1. Prabhakar avoided falling to a Tribe player for the second straight day as junior Ben Guthrie upset the nationally-ranked player in straight sets on Saturday.
The Tribe will open the 2013 dual-match season with a doubleheader at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on Sunday, Jan. 20. The Tribe will host instate foe Radford at 10 a.m., before welcoming Navy at 4 p.m.
