Tribe Suffers Setback at No. 20 Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. - For the third straight day, the William and Mary men's tennis team suffered a setback to a top 25 foe, this time falling at No. 20-ranked Clemson, 4-0, on Tuesday afternoon. In the midst four matches against nationally-ranked opponents in a five-day stretch, the Tribe fell to 6-8 overall, while the Tigers improved to 10-2.

Clemson took the doubles point with wins at the top two positions. Yannick Maden and Zachary Rigsby upended senior Anton Andersson and sophomore Aaron Chaffee, 8-4, at the No. 1 slot, while the Tribe duo of junior John Banks and freshman Scott Huang dropped an 8-3 decision to Ayrton Wibowo and Austin Ansari at No. 2.

Maden, who is ranked No. 57 nationally in singles, gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Andersson at the top post. Senior Adrian Vodislav dropped a 7-6, 6-1 match at No. 2 to Hunter Harrington. Wibowo clinched the team triumph for the Tigers with a win at No. 4. The Tribe's John Banks took the opening set from Wibowo in a tiebreaker, before the Tiger player rallied with 6-3, 6-3 wins in the second and third to pull out the team victory.

Playing at the No. 3 slot, junior Ben Hoogland split the first two sets with Gerardo Meza, before the match was called with the team result decided. Meza won the opening set, 6-2, and Hoogland bounced back to take the second, 7-5. The third set was even at five when the match was abandoned after Clemson clinched the team victory.

The Tribe will close out its spring break trip when it travels to Atlanta, Ga., to face No. 62 Georgia Tech on Thursday, March 7. The match is slated for a 3:30 p.m. time and live scoring will be available at RamblinWreck.com.
