Men's Tennis Splits Saturday Doubleheader

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary men’s tennis team split a doubleheader at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on Saturday. After dropping the opener, 6-1, to No. 27 Notre Dame, the Green and Gold bounced back with a 6-1 win over Morgan State in the nightcap. W&M moved to 8-13 on the season, while Notre Dame improved to 11-7 and Morgan State saw its three-match win streak come to a close as it fell to 4-13.

In the morning match, Notre Dame took the opening point of the match with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles posts, but the Tribe pulled out an exceptional win at the top spot. The Green and Gold tandem of senior Anton Andersson and sophomore Aaron Chaffee jumped out to an early break lead over the Irish team of Spencer Talmadge and Greg Andrews, which as been ranked as high as No. 51 nationally this season. The Notre Dame duo rallied to take a 7-6 lead, but Andersson and Chaffee would not be outdone. The Tribe pair won the final three games to pull out a 9-7 victory.

The Fighting Irish won at the top five singles positions to clinch the team triumph, but junior John Banks gave the Tribe a singles victory with a three-set triumph at No. 6. He took the opening set in a tiebreaker from Alex Lawson, 7-6, before the Notre Dame player won the second, 6-4. Banks trailed in the third-set super tiebreaker, but rallied for the 10-7 victory.

W&M blitzed Morgan State in doubles to open up a 1-0 lead in its second match of the day. Banks and junior Ben Hoogland gave the Tribe the early lead, downing Ondre Cargill and Dmitriy Boroskin, 8-1, at the No. 3 slot. Playing together for the first time, senior Adrian Vodislav and freshman Scott Huang clinched the doubles point with an 8-0 win over Evan Ward and Jannick Tash at No. 2. Andersson and Chaffee rounded out the clean slate in doubles with an 8-2 win over Duk Young Park and Eric Ward at the No. 1 post. The Tribe pair won for the third time in their last four matches at the top spot.

Banks won for the second time on the day this time at the No. 4 post to increase the Tribe lead to 2-0. He won his third straight and tallied his team-best 10th dual-match victory as he rolled past Eric Ward, 6-0, 6-2. It also marked his team-leading 16th singles win of the season.

After the Bears picked up their first point of the match with a win at No. 1, Huang and sophomore Zach Braig picked up wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively, to clinch the Green and Gold victory. Huang pushed his win total to 10, upending Dmitriy Boroskin, 6-2, 6-3. It marked his sixth in dual-match play as he moved to 3-2 at the No. 5 position. Braig recorded his first win of the season, bouncing Jannick Tash, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 6 to clinch the team triumph.

Chaffee and Vodislav rounded out the Tribe win with victories at No. 2 and No. 3. Chaffee won his seventh match of the season and second at the No. 2 slot, beating Evan Ward, 6-3, 7-6 (3), while Vodislav recorded his eighth triumph of the year, defeating Ondre Cargill, 6-4, 6-3.

With the win over Morgan State, W&M head coach Peter Daub moved closer to the 500-win mark for his career. The 20th-year Tribe headman now owns 499 wins over her career as a collegiate head coach.
The Tribe returns to action when it hosts a CAA doubleheader on Saturday, March 30. The Green and Gold welcomes James Madison to Williamsburg at 10 a.m., before facing Delaware at 5 p.m.
