Maria Belaya Named Most Outstanding Performer at the CAA Championship

RICHMOND, Va. - The Colonial Athletic Association announced William and Mary junior Maria Belaya as the 2013 CAA Women’s Tennis Championship Most Outstanding Player by vote of the league coaches on Thursday. Belaya posted a perfect singles and doubles record in leading the Green and Gold to its 22nd CAA Championship. 

Belaya, the reigning CAA Player of the Year, became the seventh W&M player on the 10th occasion to be named the CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Performer and the first since Megan Moulton-Levy won it for the third time in 2008.  A two-time First-Team All-CAA selection in singles and doubles, Belaya owns a 21-11 singles record with 13 wins at No. 1 and a team-best 26-6 doubles mark. She and fellow junior Jeltje Loomans are currently ranked No. 11 nationally in doubles.

At No. 1 doubles, Belaya posted a pair of wins with teammate Leeza Nemchinov, including the clinching victory against UNCW in the CAA Championship match. Belaya also posted dominating singles wins at the No. 1 position. She dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Danea Jonjic of Delaware in the CAA semifinal victory. Belaya was the first Tribe singles player off the court in the Championship match, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Angie Sekely to increase W&M's advantage to 2-0 on the way to the league crown.

Belaya and the Tribe sit at 17-5 on the year and are ranked No. 48 nationally in the Campbell’s ITA Rankings released on Tuesday. The Green and Gold will await the pairings for the 2013 NCAA Championship, which will be released via an Selection Show on Tuesday, April 30, at 5:30 p.m. The NCAA Individual Championship selections in both singles and doubles will be released on Wednesday, May 1, at 6 p.m. The 2013 NCAA Championship Regionals will be played on campus sites throughout the country on May 10-13. The final round of the NCAA Championship (Round of 16 through the national championship) as well as the singles and doubles championships will be played ath the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Urbana, Ill., May 16-27.
