The William and Mary women's golf team put together its third sub-300 round of the season Saturday, carding 299 (+11) and shooting up the leaderboard at the Nittany Lion Invitational to stand fifth overall at 605 (+29). Kent State holds a one-stroke lead over Yale in the 14-team event, 582 (+6) to 583, while host Penn State is third at 15-over (591). There is a three-way tie atop the individual board, with Kent State's Jennifer Ha and Josee Doyon as well as Yale's Sandy Wongwaiwate all at 2-under (142).
The Tribe's 299 is the third round of better than 300 strokes already through three tournaments this year, while in the entire previous history of W&M women's golf there had only been 11 sub-300 rounds total. Leading the way this morning was freshman Kelly McGovern (The Woodlands, Texas), who shot an even-par 72 to move up to a tie for sixth overall at 145 (+1). Sophomore Alessandra Liu (Cynwyd, Pa.) had a one-over 73 to move up to a tie for 20th (151, +7, and freshman Mia Zanghetti (Jacksonville, Fla.) matched her first-round 78 with another just like it to stand tied for 48th at 156 (+12). Juniors Kelly Okun (Palm Beach, Fla.) and Kellie Edelblut (New Hope, Pa.) are both tied for 59th at 159, Okun after improving five strokes overnight to shoot 77 (+5), and sophomore Tina Chang (Mineola, N.Y.) rounds out the squad in a tie for 67th after a 77 of her own.
The Nittany Lion Invitational wraps up Sunday, with one round starting at 9 a.m.
