CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The William and Mary men’s tennis team enjoyed a successful start at the Jim Russell Memorial Intercollegiate at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, Friday and Saturday. W&M won seven of its eight doubles matches on Friday, before advancing the team of senior Ben Guthrie and freshman Addison Appleby to the championship match on Saturday morning. In singles action, five Tribe players advanced to the quarterfinals on Friday.
Guthrie and Appleby tallied a trio of wins on the opening two days of the tournament to earn a spot in the championship match. The duo opened with an 8-3 victory over Campbell’s James Jones and Rik Van Gerwen, before upending the North Carolina pair of James Coxe and Jack Murray, 8-6, in the quarterfinals. On Saturday morning, Guthrie and Appleby downed another W&M team, knocking off freshman Damon Niquet and junior Will Juggins, 8-4, in the semifinals to improve to 3-0 at the event.
Niquet and Juggins won a pair of matches on the opening day of the event on Friday. The tandem defeated North Carolina’s Johan Skattum and Maik Ulrich, 8-4, in the first round, before picking up a tiebreaker victory, 8-7 (5), over the Campbell team of Steven Billington and Dominik Kaiewski in the quarterfinals.
Seniors John Banks and Ben Hoogland advanced to the semifinals as well before falling on Saturday morning. The Tribe duo downed UNCG’s Will Albright and Kiran Mani, 8-3, and the pair of Blaine Boyden and Robert Kelly, 8-6, on Friday. In the semifinals, the Tribe duo dropped an 8-6 decision to North Carolina’s Connor Daly and Chad Hoskins. Banks and Hoogland sit at 6-3 as a duo on the year.
Junior Aaron Chaffee and sophomore Scott Haung picked up a victory in their first match on Friday. The Tribe duo downed Campbell’s Fernando Guillen and Adrien Rossignon, 8-4.
In singles action, Guthrie remained perfect on the fall with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Matthew Gallush in the opening round. Appleby and Juggins both record victories in the same singles flight to advance to the quarterfinals. Appleby improved to 3-2 on the fall with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Campbell’s JM Krone, while Juggins tallied his fourth fall win, upending UNC’s Connor Daly, 6-1, 6-4.
In the other singles flight, Banks and Hoogland each picked up singles victory. Banks downed Chad Hoskins of North Carolina, 6-4, 6-1, for his fourth win of the fall. Hoogland picked up his second win of the fall campaign, downing Campbell’s Dominik Kaniewski.
The singles quarterfinals and semifinals were scheduled for Saturday afternoon, while the final rounds of singles and doubles will be played on Sunday morning.
