Men's Tennis Hosts In-state Foe Liberty on Thursday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Winners of three straight, the William and Mary men’s tennis team continues its 10-match homestand with one contest this week against in-state foe Liberty on Thursday, Feb. 6, evening. The match is slated for a 6 p.m. start time from the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. Live stats will be available for the match at 

Scouting William and Mary
The Tribe is riding a three-match winning streak following victories over South Carolina State, Temple and Howard last weekend, which evened its season mark at 5-5. The Green and Gold won all six singles matches in upending six-time defending MEAC Championship South Carolina State on Saturday, before recording 6-1 and 7-0 triumphs over Temple and Howard, respectively, during a Sunday doubleheader. Seniors Ben Guthrie and John Banks as well as junior Will Juggins each posted perfect 3-0 singles marks during the week, while senior Ben Hoogland and freshman Damon Niquet tallied 2-0 singles ledgers for the Green and Gold. Niquet continues to lead the Tribe in singles victories with 13, including a 6-2 dual-match mark. Guthrie moved into the No. 1 singles position for the Tribe during the week and shares the team-best dual-match mark with Niquet at 6-2. Guthrie and Banks both have 10 singles wins on the year. Banks and Hoogland teamed for a pair of doubles wins last week to up their team-leading total to 12.

Scouting Liberty
Liberty enters the match with the Tribe at 2-0 on the year. The Flames opened the season with a 6-1 win over Morehead State in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., before downing Bluefield State, 5-2, at home in its most recent contest. Liberty’s Shea Thomas and Jorge Azuero became the first Flame doubles team to garner a national ranking, coming in at No. 26 in the first standings released in 2014. The duo went 12-3 during the fall, which included winning the ITA Atlantic Region Championship and advancing to the quarterfinals at the ITA National Indoor Championship. Thomas holds down the No. 1 singles position and is 2-0 on the year, while Azuero is also 2-0 at the No. 2 post. Both Egon Samaai and Alejandro Llamas are a perfect 2-0 in dual-match play at the No.3 and No. 4 positions, repsectively.

Series History: W&M vs. Liberty
The Tribe leads the all-time series with Liberty at 4-0 with all four wins coming in Williamsburg. The first meeting came in 1993 and the Green and Gold won the most recent contest, 4-2, in Williamsburg last February.
