LA JOLLA, Calif. - The William and Mary men’s tennis team finally opened action at the 125th Pacific Coast Doubles Championship on Saturday. The duo of senior Ben Guthrie and freshman Addison Appleby led the way for the Green and Gold posting an opening round win.

Guthrie and Appleby rolled to an 8-1 win over the UC-San Diego team of Rajeev Herekar and Mark Meyer. The Tribe duo advances to the second round where it will face the No. 9 seeded team of Yousef Benhamida and Zachary Leslie at 10 a.m. PT on Sunday.

The Tribe’s remaining four teams dropped opening-round matches on Saturday. The junior tandem of Aaron Chaffee and Will Juggins suffered an 8-6 setback to the Pepperdine team of Kento Tanaka Tamaki and Stefan Menichella, while seniors John Banks and Ben Hoogland also dropped an 8-6 decision to the Stanford pair of Jamin Ball and Trey Strobel.

Playing the event’s No. 3 seed, sophomore Scott Huang and freshman Damon Niquet fell to Oklahoma State’s Brady Bohrnstedt and Arjun Kadhe, 8-3. The Tribe pair of junior Jacob Braig and redshirt freshman Austin Davidow dropped an 8-4 affair to Villanova’s Tim Abbracciamento and Mark Miller in the opening round.

The Tribe’s scheduled dual-match with No. 28 Pepperdine on Saturday was cancelled due to inclement weather and the delay in play at the doubles championship. With the truncated schedule due to rain in California over the weekend, the consolation matches have been cancelled. Play gets underway at 8 a.m. PT on Sunday at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
