Colonial Relays Opens With Women's Hammer at W&M

The 49th Annual Colonial Relays started up Thursday evening with the women's hammer throw, under perfect weather conditions at William and Mary's Stimson Throwing Events Area.  After one event, Delaware has a slim 11-10 lead over Rider, while the Tribe women's track and field team is sixth out of seven scoring teams so far.

For W&M, sophomore Rochelle Evans (Christiansburg, Va.) saved her best for last, throwing 43.38m (142-4) on her final throw to take seventh overall.  Senior Erin Challis (Toano, Va.) was 13th overall in her final home event, throwing 40.49m (132-10).  Rider's Rhea Phipps was the champion at 50.38m (165-3), just behind the ECAC qualifying barrier, while Mount St. Mary's Madeleine Midles threw 48.63m on her final attempt to take second.  Third place went to Alana Pantale of Delaware, 47.29m (155-2).

Events start back up on Friday morning, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in Zable Stadium with the women's unseeded 5,000m run.
