Of W&M's four competitors, all sophomores, three will run in the 5,000m championship on Thursday night at 9:20 p.m.  Ryan Gousse (Apopka, Fla.) leads the way alongside teammates Nathaniel Hermsmeier (Charlottesville, Va.) and Nathan Thomas (Brentwood, Tenn.).  Gousse was an IC4A qualifier indoors in the 5,000m, and ran a personal-best 14:43.16 at the season-ending championships in March.  In his last appearance, he won the 3,000m steeplechase at the Colonial Relays in 9:04.20, currently ranking top-40 in the east region and first in the CAA.  Hermsmeier was ninth at 5,000m in the CAA Championships last spring, and has run 14:40.35 in the event.  He began the spring season with a lifetime-best 8:28.28 win at 3,000m at the Tribe Invitational.  Thomas' personal-best at 5,000m of 14:52.27 came at the conference meet as a freshman, when he took fifth, and he timed 15:06.35 three weeks ago at the Colonial Relays.

On Friday morning, at 10 a.m., sophomore Derek O'Connell (Virginia Beach, Va.) will compete in the pole vault.  Currently ranked among the top-30 in the East Region, O'Connell leads the CAA at a height of 5.10m (16-8.75).  He set that height, and broke W&M's 42-year-old record in the process, at Richmond a month ago.  O'Connell has cleared 16-feet six times so far in 2014.
