For the 22nd time this season the Tribe plated a run in the first inning. Thompson started the rally with a one-out single to right field. The next batter, Katz belted a double to left center field, scoring Thompson from first, and giving the Tribe a 1-0 lead.
The Tribe extended its lead with a run in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Thompson doubled, starting the rally. After an out, Hissey singled, giving the Tribe a 2-0 advantage.
W&M added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lowe led off the inning with a double down the right field line, moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Nutter. After a walk to Thompson, Katz sent a sacrifice fly to center, making the score 3-0.
Towson tied the game with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Brady Policelli led of the inning with a walk, moving to second on a single by Brendan Butler. The next batter, Hunter Bennett singled to left, scoring Policelli. The runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Zach Fisher. A single from Brandon Gonnella brought around Butler. The final run of the inning came around a sacrifice fly from Dominic Fratantuono, tying the score 3-3.
The Tribe regained the lead in the home half of the sixth. Sophomore Charley Gould led off the inning with a double down the right field line. The next batter, Casey singled through the middle, plating Gould. Casey moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Lowe singled, brining around Casey, giving the Tribe a 5-3 lead.
Towson added a run in the top of the seventh inning. Policelli started the inning with an infield single, moving to second on a single by Butler. A fielder’s choice allowed for Policelli to come around and score.
The Green and Gold added three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Katz led off the inning with a single, moving to third on a base hit by Hissey. A wild pitch allowed Katz to score. Freshman Porter Reinhart earned a walk, putting runners on first and second. A single from plated both Hissey and Reinhart, giving the Tribe an 8-4 advantage.
The Tigers added another run in the top of the eighth inning. Pat Fitzgerald led of the frame with a solo shot over the left field wall, cutting the Tribe lead to 8-5.
W&M scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Thompson led off the frame with a walk, moving to second on a single from Katz. A one-out walk by Reinhart loaded the bases for the Tribe. Smith was hit by a pitch, brining around Thompson.
Towson scratched across two runs in the top of the ninth inning. Butler hit a one-out double to left, starting the rally. The next batter, Bennett singled down the left field line, scoring Butler. The final run of the game came around on a single from Fitzgerald.
Sophomore Joseph Gaouette made his first start of the season for the Tribe, but didn’t factor in the decision. He pitched five innings allowing four hits with four strikeouts. Freshman Daniel Powers earned his first collegiate victory, throwing one inning and allowing a hit. Casey earned his fifth save of the season for the Tribe allowing four runs, two hits, with three strikeouts. The loss was charged to Towson’s Bruce Zimmerman.
With the win today, the Tribe claimed its 30th win this season. The Tribe has now won, at least, 30 games in each of the last three seasons.
W&M, which will again be off during the mid-week, returns to action with its finial non-conference weekend series of the year when they travel to Gardner-Webb. The series kicks off on Thursday, May 8 at 6 p.m.
