Lambda Chi Honors Memory of Brothers, Endows Baseball and Football Scholarships

On May 3, prior to a Tribe baseball game, the William and Mary Athletics Department hosted the families of Doug Williams and John Davis, Jr., at Plumeri Park to celebrate the announcement of the Davis and Williams Athletic Memorial Scholarship Endowment.

Robert Jackson III ‘92, one of the main organizers behind the gift, best describes the intent of the Endowment, which will go towards funding baseball and football scholarships, in the following statement.

“The Members of Lambda Chi Alpha at The College of William & Mary have made an effort over the years to honor the memories of our Brothers who have gone before us and support the various charities in their names.  John Robert Davis, Jr., passed on April 24, 1992, just prior to his graduation from The College of William and Mary. There are times when pivotal moments occur and decisions are made that cast an infinite ripple forward in our lives - this was just a time. Together, the Brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha chose not dwell in the past, but always to remember. Taking this tragic event and working for a positive to emerge forged an even stronger bond that aided us in enduring additional hardship, with the passing of Doug Williams. Although little can be spoken to ease the grief of their families, rest assured their Sons will never be forgotten and forever honored through the scholarships in their names.”

The highlight of the pre-game ceremonies announcing the gift was Diane Allen (Doug Williams widow) and Davis’ niece, Caroline Royal, having the opportunity to throw out the game’s first pitches.

“We are sincerely honored to have the support of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity in this memorial endowment,” stated Bobby Dwyer, the Director of William and Mary’s Tribe Club.  “Both John (baseball) and Doug (football) were student-athletes, and each year a member of those program will benefit, thanks to the generosity of Lambda Chi Alpha.”
