Tribe Volleyball Adds Stellar Quintet of Freshmen

William and Mary head volleyball coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton '91 announced the signing of five incoming freshmen today, providing an immediate boost to the team's fortunes this fall.  The recruiting class includes the 2013 Maryland Gatorade State Player of the Year, as well as a number of national-level competitors.

"This group of five promises to allow us to play much higher above the net," noted Shelton when talking about the class.  "Maddie, Paige, and Sydney are all very close to a 10-foot approach touch while the ball control from Sara and the accuracy of Austyn will keep us in system. They will make our program much better right away and I know our fans will enjoy following them for the next four years."

Following is a brief look at each new member of the Tribe:

Austyn Ames - 5-9, S
Wichita, Kan./Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic (Heartland Juniors VBC)

Coach's Take - "Austyn has had lots of success from the setter's position and we expect her to challenge for a spot in our line-up right away. She's incredibly enthusiastic and plays with a big smile. She will immediately add energy to our team."

Prep: Anchored the Kapaun offense for four years as the starting setter ... Led her team to a third-place finish in the state tournament each of the past two years ... Lost in the semifinals to the nation's top-ranked team each year ... Earned a spot on the Kansas Volleyball Association All-Star team as a senior ... Named all-conference at setter in 2012 and 2013 ... Helped her club team earn four bids to Junior Nationals in the past five years ... Led her club in aces as well as assists ... Member of the honor roll all four years of high school ... Part of the Athletic Trainer Intern program ... Volunteered her time at numerous Wichita-area charities, including a food kitchen and the VA.
Personal: Daughter of Susan and Benjamin Ames, Jr. ... Father played hockey at U. of Alaska ... Mother played tennis at TCU ... Uncle, Jay Harrison, graduated from W&M in 1982 ... Enjoys mountain hiking, swimming, and traveling ... Undecided as to her collegiate major.

Sydney Biniak - 6-0, OH
Elkridge, Md./Howard (Columbia Volleyball Club)

Coach's Take - "Sydney is the latest addition to our team. We went after Sydney knowing she can play either the right or left pin as a physical player. She's a natural athlete who will just start concentrating on volleyball for the first time when she gets to W&M. I'm excited to see how good Sydney can be."

Prep: Three-sport star at Howard High ... Was the 2013 Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year in Maryland ... Also earned Player of the Year honors from the Baltimore Sun and the Howard County Times following her senior campaign ... Named first-team All-Met by the Washington Post ... Captained Howard to the county title in 2013 ... Named first-team all-county as a junior ... Won the 2013 Maryland 3A state high jump title at a height of 5-6 ... Won the high jump, long jump, and triple jump county titles as a senior in 2014 ... First-team all-track in 2013 by the Baltimore Sun and Howard County Times ... 2013 Honorable-mention all-met by the Washington Post ... Also a standout center on the basketball team, captaining Howard each of her last two years ... Earned first-team all-county honors in basketball as well in 2013 and 2014 ... Helped claim the county championship as a senior ... Member of the National Honor Society and the National Art Honor Society ... Honor roll all four years of high school ... Never missed a day of school from kindergarten on up.
Personal: Daughter of Linda Barnhouse and Richard Biniak, Jr. ... Father ran cross country and track at UMBC ... Brother, MacGyver, played basketball at St. Mary's (Md.) ... Enjoys cooking and photography ... Plans to major in marketing.

Paige Humphrey - 6-1, M
Oak Hill, Va./The Madeira School (Virginia Elite)

Coach's Take - "Paige was the first member of this class and is an incredibly talented volleyball athlete. She has the ability to play anywhere along the net and will give us some flexibility in several spots."

Prep: Captained Madeira each of the last two years, including to a spot in the state quarterfinals as a senior ... Named first-team all-state both as a sophomore and as a senior, earning second-team honors as a junior ... Made the Washington Post’s second team All-Met after her senior campaign ... Picked to the all-league team in 2011 and 2013 as well ... The Washington Post named her the No. 1 blocker in Northern Virginia after leading Madeira to the state title in 2011 ... Hit .415 for her career ... Member of the Chinese Club, and the school paper ... Was the fundraising head of her class as a sophomore and as a junior.
Personal: Daughter of Phyllis and Dr. Jeffrey Humphrey ... Grandfather swam at Michigan ... Enjoys programming, playing with her dog, and playing beach volleyball ... Plans to major in business.

Maddie Sanford - 5-11, OH
Georgetown, Texas/Rouse (Austin Junior Volleyball)

Coach's Take - "Maddie will be a terrific addition to our roster. We feel so lucky to have her joining our program. She's a hard worker with an incredibly positive attitude and very good hitting skills. She will make our group of left side attackers stronger right away."

Prep: Earned first-team all-district honors each of the past two years ... Captained Rouse and earned MVP honors in both 2012 and 2013 ... Named to the district all-tournament team as a junior ... Also a member of the Rouse track team ... Won the area championship in the triple jump as a senior ... Ranked first in her graduating class ... Academic All-State and all-district all four years of high school ... AP Scholar with Honor ... President of the National Honor Society.
Personal: Daughter of Laurel Dunn and Brad Sanford ... Enjoys crafting, being outdoors, and working out ... Plans to major in accounting.

Sara Zumbach - 5-7, DS
Franklin, Tenn./Battle Ground Academy (Alliance Volleyball Club)

Coach's Take - "Sara will be playing the libero position for us and has the skills and determination to earn a starting role early on. She's had a terrific club season, receiving great coaching and playing against top level competition which will have her ready for the jump to our level."

Prep: Was a standout both at outside hitter and libero ... Selected to PrepVolleyball.com's 2013 Senior Aces and Defensive Dandy lists ... In 2012, was the libero for USA Volleyball's Youth Continental Team at the HP Championships ... At BGA, earned all-state and All-Mid State honors in 2012 while leading her team to the state semifinals ... All-Region winner in both 2011 and 2012 ... By the end of her junior year, had collected more than 1,000 career kills already ... High Honor Roll all four years of high school ... Member of the National Honor Society ... Member of the Mu Alpha Theta math honor society ... Completed more than 200 hours of community service her junior year of high school.
Personal: Daughter of Loren and David Zumbach ... Father played football at Boston College ... Grandfather, Paul Johnson, played both football and hockey for BC ... Enjoys working out, listening to music, and going to the lake ... Plans to major in kinesiology and health sciences.
