William and Mary Athletics
The College of William and Mary sponsors 23 varsity sports, and competes in the Colonial Athletic Association, with the exception of men's and women's gymnastics (ECAC). W&M provides students with a unique and successful balance of athletics and academics. The Tribe Athletics Department was 93rd nationally in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings for 2009-10, a number that topped the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) programs and ranked third in the state of Virginia. The Directors’ Cup, which was created by the NACDA and USA Today in 1993-94, is a program that honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in many sports, both men’s and women’s. W&M has placed among the top 100 nationally in 13 of the program’s 17 years, while leading the CAA on eight occasions, including this past season.
W&M has produced more CAA Championships than any program in the league’s history. The College owns 101 league crowns, 40 more than its closest competitor. The Tribe raked in the awards in 2009-10 as well, tallying a combined 182 all-conference honors, 36 All-America honors and eight league players of the year. During the 2008-09 season, the Green and Gold produced an overall athletics winning percentage of 67.6, while racking up a combined 813 wins.
Along with its accomplishments on the field of play, the Tribe is just as successful in the classroom, epitomizing the term student-athlete. The W&M Athletics Department routinely ranks among the national leaders in the NCAA released Academic Progress Report and Graduation Rates per sport. Since the inception of the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year, W&M has produced 30 honorees, more than any school in the conference.Sporting a rich tradition in the playing arena and in the classroom, the College of William and Mary sports one of the most highly successful athletic departments in the country, as evidenced by its 101 Colonial Athletic Association Championships, the highest of any CAA member, and numerous other championships from years past.

The Recruiting Process
1. If you have an interest in attending William and Mary and competing on an intercollegiate team the first step is to contact the head coach. Phone and email numbers are available on the staff directory.
2. In most cases you will be asked to provide general personal, academic and athletic information to allow the coach to evaluate your credentials.
3. Prospective students are permitted unlimited unofficial visits to the campus for the purposes of evaluating the academic and athletic program.
4. Selected prospects will be invited to campus for an official visit. Prospects may make only one official visit to an institution and are limited to a maximum of five official visits in the recruiting process.
5. Coaches make recruiting and scholarship decisions based on the following:
a. Academic credentials; admissions office must approve for admission.
b. Roster spots available and program needs at the time.
c. A good fit with coaches, student-athletes and program. We want individuals who want William and Mary because of both the academic and athletic challenges.
d. Individuals are recruited both as scholarship and nonscholarship athletes. Scholarship allocations are limited by budget and NCAA individual and team financial aid limitations.
6. Keep in mind that this is a very competitive process both on the academic and athletic side. As a prospective student and student-athlete you are encouraged to maintain control of the situation and to show initiative and interest through the process. If you have questions ask the coach.
7. William and Mary does offer athletic scholarships in most but not all sports.
8. Athletic Scholarships are awarded based on the coach's recommendation. The College of William and Mary is part of the National Letter of Intent Program and students entering college for the first time who are offered an athletic scholarship will sign both a William and Mary Financial Aid Agreement and a National Letter of Intent (NLI).
9. Under the NLI program there are designated signing periods by sport. Once an individual signs a NLI to attend a specific university any change in that decision would result in the loss of athletic eligibility. Be sure to read the entire NLI document prior to signing the agreement. With any NLI you should receive a separate document which specifies the amount of the athletic scholarship.
Admissions
1. All students must complete an admissions application. If you know that William and Mary is one of your top choices you are encouraged to complete an admissions application early in the process. The application is available online at www.wm.edu or a link to the specific admissions office site is provided below.
2. The College has both an early and regular decision admissions process. The specific dates and deadlines for each review process are noted on the admissions department website. Generally, early decision offers of admission are made in early December and the regular admissions decisions are forwarded the 1st of May. Keep in mind that if you apply early decision, you have said W&M is your top choice and if offered admission you will accept.
Institutional Financial Aid
1. All students are encouraged to apply for need-based financial aid.
2. The first step in the process is to complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It is suggested that you submit the application electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Our federal school code number is 003705.

The City of Willliamsburg and the State of Virginia
The College of William and Mary is located in one of the most historic towns in America, Williamsburg. Located in the heart of Virginia's Historic Triangle, Williamsburg traces its history back over 350 years.
Today, with a population of 11,530 Williamsburg still plays an important role in the state of Virginia. With the College, it is a center of higher education, and with Colonial Williamsburg, it has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the state.
Nearby to Williamsburg are other noted historic and recreational areas. Jamestown, the first permanent English colony in America is located just outside of town on the James River. The site of George Washington's decisive victory over the British, Yorktown is a short drive down the Colonial Parkway from Williamsburg.
An hour's drive away are both Richmond, the capital of Virginia, and Norfolk, home of the U.S. Navy's Atlantic Fleet and the largest naval base in the world. Just beyond Norfolk is Virginia Beach, one of the largest beach resort areas on the East Coast. It offers an excellent beach on the Atlantic Ocean and a three-mile long boardwalk.
The College is located in historic Williamsburg, VA, approximately 150 miles south of Washington, D.C., midway between Richmond and Norfolk, and the campus is approximately 1,200 acres including picturesque Lake Matoaka and the College Woods. Adjacent to Colonial Williamsburg, the Ancient Campus section is restored to 18th-century appearance.
