The William and Mary women's golf team bucked the trend Saturday at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, cutting seven strokes in the second round when the average gain was five strokes per team. After shooting 309 (+21) on the day, the Tribe moved up to sixth overall, just 12 strokes out of a top-three finish. UNC Wilmington took over the lead at 605 (+29) after its round of 305, and Georgia State's Charlotte Lorentzen went 3-under on the day to take the individual lead at 144 (E).
For the Tribe, freshman Kelly Okun (Palm Beach, Fla.) had three birdies coming in on the front nine to shoot 75 (+3) on the day, and improved to a tie for 12th at 155 (+11) overall. Senior Caroline Sweet (Bowie, Md.) is also tied for 12th, after shooting 76 in the second round. Junior Betsy Birchall (Mountain Brook, Ala.) carded 77 on Saturday, and improved to a tie for 20th overall at 158 (+14). Senior Kristen Hamel (Chesterfield, Mo.) had a rough first nine but recovered with three birdies coming back in, shooting 81 overall and standing tied for 23rd at 15-over. Hamel is also tied for second overall in the field with seven birdies total in the tournament, behind only Lorentzen. Rounding out the Tribe's team effort is freshman Kellie Edelblut (New Hope, Pa.), who stands tied for 37th overall heading into the final day.
The CAA Championships are being hosted this year at the Reserve Club's St. James Plantation course, in Southport, N.C.. The final round will be played on Sunday morning, with the winning team earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional round.
