Tribe 20 Questions with Caroline Sweet

Q: Why did you choose the Tribe?
I chose to commit to William and Mary after my first official visit. The weather was beautiful both days I was there. My host was super nice and I had so much fun when we went out to a frat party that night that I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else. Everyone at the party was brilliant, but they also all seemed to be capable of letting their hair down. I committed a day later, and my host is now one of my very best friends.

Q: Describe a moment when you felt the most Tribe pride...
My freshmen year our team won the Penn State Nittony Lion Invitational. It was our first tournament of the year and my first college tournament. Up until that point I had been nearly overwhelmed by the experience of college and trying to get to know my teammates, but when we won that tournament it was like all the pieces fell into place. I felt a bond with my teammates; we had come together and represented the Tribe in the best way possible, by winning!

Q: Take us through your pre-game mental preparation routine:
My mental preparation for a tournament starts a couple weeks before the actual event, during which I daydream the entire time about the exact way in which I am going to spectacularly win. This gets me excited enough to practice a little longer each day, even when I don’t want to because I have a test to study for or a paper to write, because I tell myself that I’m practicing the EXACT shot that is going to win me that big trophy. Then, the night before, I go over the strategy my coach and my team have decided on for that specific tournament and course and make a promise to myself that I’m not going to veer from it. The final part of my mental prep occurs right before I tee off: I tell myself I’m taking it one shot at a time, and convince myself that I am better than Tiger Woods. Then I tee off.

Q: Do you belong to any other clubs, groups, or organizations?
Nope! I don’t have time, physically or mentally! My pea brain can only handle being successful at two things—golf and school.

Q: What are some community activities you or your team have done?
Last year our team participated in Campus Kitchen, a program that cooks and delivers meals to those in need. We met every other Monday or Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church on Richmond Road to either cook or deliver meals. One time, we went and played with children in a nearby community for a couple hours, which was really fun. Half the team did arts and crafts stuff with them and the other played games like soccer and football. What I like most about it was the feeling that we were helping others and the opportunity to bond with each other over something that wasn’t competitive.

Q: What is your intended or declared major and why?
I am an English major. I have loved to read and write since I was a kid. I used to want to be an author, but now I don’t know what I want to be at all. I’ve stuck with my English major because I’m good at it, and even though I might not want to teach or write, I still enjoy the classes!

Q: Describe your dream job:
My dream job would be as an image consultant for top athletes. I love sports and being creative, and I feel like this would merge my two loves. My dream job would also make me enough money that I could retire early and spend the rest of my life watching movies and playing with puppies.

Q: If you could play another sport at W&M what would it be and why?
I would be on the track team. I have always been terrible at running and I think it would be so cool to be really really good at it. Not only would I be in great shape, I would also be super fast, which is a secret dream of mine and a great skill to have in a pinch.

Q: Favorite team tradition/activity and why?
My favorite team tradition is really the Kiawah Island tournament we play every year in the spring. It is such a fun trip, partly because it’s at the beginning of the spring semester so none of us have much work to worry about yet, and partly because it is so beautiful there. I always feel a strong sense of closeness with my teammates on that trip for some reason. I suppose it’s only a “tradition” in the sense that we have gone every year.

Q: Which teammate will have the most interesting job in 10 years and why?
Either Betsy or Kristen will have the most interesting job in ten years. Kristen might because her personality is to be open to anything- I could see her giving volcano tours on Hawaii. Betsy could because she will be my children’s pediatrician, and I’m pretty sure my children are going to be a handful.

Q: What animal would best describe you and why?
I think am most like a puppy. I really like them and they are cuddly.

Q: What is your favorite quote or phrase?

Q: What is your favorite type of food?
Mexican!!! Just ask my teammates!

Q: Favorite place you have visited or traveled to and why?
My family took a vacation to Yellowstone National Park when my brother and I were young. I have never seen so many animals! Every time I remember that trip I get nostalgic about my family.

Q: If you could sit down for lunch with anyone in the world who would it be and why?
Steve Jobs. I would kill for my iPhone and iPad, so I think it would be really cool to ask him what inspired him to create them.

Q: Most addicting television show?
Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman. I am addicted to astronomy and physics, even though I’m terrible at it myself. I love this show because it presents really complicated concepts about the universe in a simple and interesting way. I also love Morgan Freeman, so that’s a plus.

Q: How will you change the world?
I don’t know, I’m not even good at changing my own habits!

Q: Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know…
I’ve always wanted to have a bush baby as a pet. They are really funny looking and if I had one I could take it anywhere because its so small I could just shove it in my pocket.

Q: What was your most commented Facebook post?
I have no clue.

Q: What’s number one on your bucket list and why?
I want to see an atom, because I would be seeing the building block of the universe.

Q: What is your best non-athletic skill?
I am a good artist. When I was younger I used to draw a lot more than I do today, but I still sketch once in a while.

Q: Favorite person to follow on twitter?
Alex Ovechkin. He is my favorite athlete besides Tiger Woods, and his tweets are absolutely ridiculous. He really shouldn’t have one.

Q: What is your biggest pet peeve and why?
I can’t stand when Mexican restaurants only put one salsa at the table with a big bowl of chips. The salsa is always gone well before the chips are, and then you are stuck with a bunch of chips with nothing to dip them in. It drives me nuts.

Q: What is something you are afraid of?
I am very afraid of spiders. Even though they are small they are incredibly fast and creepy.

Q:  What is an obstacle you had to overcome in your life?
When I was 16 my dog died. It was my first experience with death and I did not deal with it well at all. It helped me understand that just because you care about something or somebody does not mean that it will last forever. I think having to deal with that helped me to recognize when I am taking things for granted, and it also made me realize that even the hardest things to face, things that are totally out of your control, can be overcome: today I can look back on memories of my dog and smile.
