FARMVILLE, Va. - The William and Mary men's soccer team defeated Longwood, 3-1, Monday night from the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Junior Ben Coffey and sophomore's Chris Albiston and Michael Teiman each recorded goals for the Tribe, while junior Chris Perez and sophomore Chris Dunn each tallied an assist.
Statement from head
coach Chris Norris: "Overall, we played well and I'm happy with
the performance, especially in the first half. In the opening half, we had two well-executed
goals with the first coming after we won the ball at midfield and Perez (Chris)
found Albiston (Chris) on the left wing for a one-on-one far post score. The
second goal came after we gained possession at midfield again, and this time we
pressured down the right side and Coffey (Ben) broke low and hard as he flicked
it into the near post. Our final score came on a well-played corner kick early
in the second half. Perez (Chris) had a nice serve and Teiman (Michael) was
able to head the ball into the back of the net. We still have work to do, but
our effort and attitude were great. Definitely happy to score some goals."
The Tribe got on the scoreboard first, after Albiston got behind the defense on the left-wing for the opening goal in the 25th minute. Just 13 minutes later, W&M pushed its advantage to 2-0 after Coffey netted a score to the near post off of a serve from Dunn. For the half, W&M outshot LU, 7-1, and held an, 3-1, edge over the Lancers in corner kicks.
W&M stretched its margin to 3-0 just moments into the second half. Teiman headed in a corner kick from a Perez serve in the 46th minute as the Tribe went ahead by three. In the 61st minute, Longwood got on the board as sophomore Anthony Ugorgi found the back of the net off of a pass from senior Patrick Daniel.
For the match, W&M outshot Longwood, 9-4, and held the advantage in corner kicks, 6-4, over the Lancers.
