HARRISONBURG, Va. - Four William and Mary Tribe men's soccer players earned All-CAA honors on Wednesday night at the league's annual awards banquet. Senior Nicolas Abrigo was named First-Team All-CAA, while sophomore defender Will Smith was named second-team all-conference. Both Marcus Luster and Michael Teiman were named to the CAA All-Rookie team.
After a tremendous 2010 CAA Tournament where he earned Most Outstanding Player honors, Abrigo kept that momentum going in 2011, posting his best season for the Green and Gold and earning All-CAA First Team honors. Abrigo led the team and tied for seventh in the CAA with eight goals, while his 18 points on the season tied for 10th in the league. Abrigo made his goals count year, as he led the conference with five game-winning goals. The first of those came in the season's first match, where Abrigo netted a pair of scored in the College's upset win at No. 5 SMU. Abrigo also tallied a pair of scores in the Tribe' must-win game against Hofstra on October 29, leading W&M to the victory.
With a solid rookie season already under his belt, Smith had an even better year in 2011, earning All-CAA Second-Team accolades. A consistent force and leader on the Tribe's backline, the center back Smith has played every minute so far this season for the College. Smith helped the College tie for second in goals allowed in the CAA with 20, while the team's goals against average of 1.10 also ranked second in the league. Smith also helped out on the offensive end this year, tallying an assist in the Tribe's wins over UNC Greensboro and Towson.
After showing tremendous versatility this season, Luster was tabbed as a CAA All-Rookie Team selection by the conference's coaches. Starting all 17 matches in which he appeared this year, luster has played four different positions - center back, outside back, center midfield, and outside midfield. A defensive-minded player, Luster helped the Tribe post four-straight shutout victories from September 17 through October 1, including crucial CAA wins over UNCW, Drexel, and Towson.
Also earning CAA All-Rookie Team honors for the Tribe was Teiman, who was another key cog in the Tribe's defense this season. From the first match of the year, Teiman played along side Smith at the other center back position, playing every minute of the 17 matches he appeared in. Teiman also played a part in the offense in 2011, scoring the game winner at Drexel and tallying an assist in the College's 3-2, overtime victory over Northeastern.
The No. 3-seeded William and Mary Tribe will open up its defense of the CAA title this Thursday, November 10 when it plays the No. 6-seeded Georgia State Panthers. The match is scheduled for a 5 p.m. kickoff in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
