In its previewing series, 'Touting the Tribe,' TribeAthletics.com gives fans a glance at William and Mary student-athletes to keep an eye on during the upcoming 2012-13 season. The Tribe athlete featured today today is sophomore swimmer Kemp Pettyjohn of the Green and Gold men's swim team.

With just one season under his swim cap, Pettyjohn has already established himself as one of the greatest swimmers in school history, especially in the distance events.  He finished second in both the 500 and 1650 free at the CAA Championships last spring, and added a fifth-place finish in the 400 IM.  Pettyjohn also led off the Tribe's title-winning 800 free relay, breaking the freshman record in the 200 free in the process.  His times in the 500, 1000, and 1650 free broke both the W&M freshman and school records, and also breached the provisional-qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships.

In recognition of his efforts, which helped lead the Tribe to a surprise third-place finish at the conference meet, Pettyjohn was named the CAA Rookie of the Year and an honorable-mention Mid-Major All-American.  He is the first men's swimmer ever to win a major performance award from the CAA, and the first conference-award-winner since Pete McIntosh '65 was named the Southern Conference Most Valuable Swimmer in 1965.

Pettyjohn and his teammates opened the season last weekend with a dominating 191-89 win over Towson, and will swim at home for the first time this weekend.  The Tribe takes on Mary Washington on Friday at 5 p.m., in the Rec Center Pool.
