William and Mary freshman Kemp Pettyjohn (Lynchburg, Va.) was named the Men's Swimming Rookie of the Year by the Colonial Athletic Association Wednesday, after an outstanding season that saw him break five school and freshman records and qualify for the NCAA Championships in three events.  Pettyjohn was selected by vote of the CAA's coaches, and is the first Tribe swimmer ever named Rookie of the Year.  In fact, his is the first end of year performance award ever won by a W&M man since beginning CAA competition in 1986.

During the regular season Pettyjohn was a solid contributor for the Tribe, ranking fifth on the team with 108 points, six victories, and 16 top-three finishes.  However, it was during three days at the CAA Championships that Pettyjohn established himself as one of the top athletes in the league, earning two silver medals and one relay title.  On the first day, he finished second in the 500 free, breaking both the school and freshman records in both prelims and finals.  Friday saw Pettyjohn finish sixth individually in the 400 IM, swimming the second-fastest time in school history, and he also earned his first conference championship in the 800 free relay.  His lead-off leg broke the freshman record at 200 free, and helped break the school relay record as well.  Saturday's final day brought Pettyjohn the school and freshman records in the 1000 and 1650 freestyles, and another silver medal.  Pettyjohn earned NCAA "B" qualifications in both the 500 free and the 1650 free, as well as part of the 800 free relay.  At the conference meet, no freshman (man or woman) scored more than his 47 team points.
