The William and Mary men's golf team broke through Monday in the final round of the Cobra/Puma Invitational, improving a massive 14 strokes to shoot 284 (-4) and shoot up the leaderboard to finish eighth out of 15 teams. Florida Gulf Coast claimed the team title in the event with a 54-hole total of 837 (-27), 19 strokes ahead of Penn State. FGCU also took the individual medal, with Edward Figueroa shooting 64 in the final round to finish at 200 (-16) overall.
All four of the Tribe's scoring athletes shot even par or better, as the team's combined score of 284 (-4) is one of the six best rounds ever recorded. W&M's three-day total of 880 (+16) is tied for the ninth-best score all-time. Senior Jeremy Wells (Hopewell, Va.) carded a final-round 70 to finish his tournament tied for 16th at 216 (E), and junior Tanner Taddeo (Hendersonville, Tenn.) matched him with a 70 of his own to vault into a tie for 32nd at 221 (+5). Sophomore Alex Hicks (Cape May Court House, N.J.) matched Taddeo in the final standings after a final round 72 (E), and junior Michael Bekken (Blacksburg, Va.) also shot 72 to finish tied for 35th at 222 (+6). Sophomore Joey Shroyer (Victoria, Minn.) rounded out the team effort in 76th place, with a three-round total of 237 (+21).
William and Mary will return to the links in three weeks, competing at the Georgetown Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 22-23.
