Williamsburg, Va. - William and Mary men's tennis junior Jamie Whiteford earned a lofty national ranking in the first Campbell/ITA Rankings of 2012 released by the organization on Tuesday, Jan. 3. After an impressive fall campaign, Whiteford earned his first career national singles ranking, coming in at No. 34 in the country.

Whiteford compiled a 12-5 fall ledger, which included five wins over players currently in the national top 125. Highlighting his fall season, the Surrey, England native secured the program's first ITA Atlantic Region Singles Championship with a straight sets win over No. 11-ranked Jarmere Jenkins of Virginia during the fall. All five of his setbacks during the fall came to players in the national rankings, including three in the top 31.

Whiteford's No. 34 national ranking was the highest for a Colonial Athletic Association player in the standings released on Tuesday and marks the highest for a Green and Gold men's tennis player since Jeff Kader was ranked No. 26 in the 2004 preseason rankings. Along with his ITA Atlantic Region Singles Championship, Whiteford became the fourth W&M player to compete in the ITA National Collegiate Indoor Championships during the fall campaign.

The Tribe and Whiteford will kick off the spring season at the Duke Invitational, Jan. 14-16, in Durham, N.C. The Green and Gold will start the dual-match campaign with a home doubleheader against UMBC and Richmond the very next day on Tuesday, Jan. 17. W&M welcomes the Retrievers to the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center at 10 a.m., before hosting the Spiders at 5 p.m.
