Richmond, Va. - The William and Mary men's tennis team locked horns with the
No. 36-ranked VCU Rams on Wednesday afternoon, before falling 5-2 at the Thalhimer
Tennis Center. Graduate student Robert Pietrucha and sophomore Ben Guthrie
tallied singles wins for the Green and Gold against VCU. The Tribe fell to
10-14 on the season and 2-2 in CAA action, while the Rams upped its mark to 18-4
overall and 4-0 in league play.
Returning to the Tribe lineup, Guthrie recorded his third straight victory, dispatching VCU's Filip Svensson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 3 position. The Tribe sophomore owns victories in five of his last six matches and improved to 7-4 in dual-match play with his 10th singles win of the year.
Pietrucha upped his team-leading dual-match record to 12-7 with a straight-sets win at the No. 5 slot. He tallied his 20th victory of the season in defeating Alejandro Argente, 6-3, 7-6.
VCU swept doubles to take the opening point of the match, before claiming wins at the No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles slots to record their sixth straight victory. Sophomore Ben Hoogland narrowly missed giving W&M its third point on the evening as he dropped a tight match at the No. 4 slot. VCU's Antoine Baroz was able to outlast Hoogland in a pair of tiebreakers, 7-6, 7-6, to round out the Ram victory.
W&M will close out the regular season when it travels to Old Dominion for a CAA tilt on Saturday, April 14. The start time for the Tribe-Monarch match-up is 1 p.m. at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center in Norfolk.
