Women's Tennis Hosts Virginia Tech Tuesday

Williamsburg, Va. - The William and Mary women's tennis team returns to action as it welcomes Virginia Tech to Williamsburg on Tuesday, March 20. It will mark the third straight match against ACC competition for the Green and Gold, and the contest is slated for a 1 p.m. start time at the Millie West Tennis Facility, weather permitting.

The matchup with the Hokies will mark the first of three home matches for the Tribe this week.  W&M will also host a pair of Ivy League foes on Friday, March 23, and Saturday, March 24. The College welcomes Columbia to Williamsburg for a 2 p.m. contest on Friday, before meeting Harvard on Saturday at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Millie West Tennis Facility, weather permitting.

The Tribe is coming off a 6-1 setback at No. 7 Virginia on Sunday, March 18, and sits at 4-11 on the season. Against the Cavaliers, the sophomore duo of Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans continued its terrific play in doubles, knocking off the pairs' third top 25 nationally ranked doubles team of the year. Belaya and Loomans, who are ranked No. 39 nationally in doubles, outlasted the No. 16-ranked UVA team of Li Xi and Emily Fraser in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (4), for their ninth straight win in improving to 16-5 overall. Junior Anik Cepeda won her second straight match against ACC competition, defeating Hana Tomljanovic at the No. 4 singles position for her sixth win of the year.

Virginia Tech rides a three-match win streak into the tilt with the Tribe and possesses an overall mark of 10-5 and an ACC ledger of 2-1. As part of the Hokies' win streak, Virginia Tech upset No. 53 Boston College, 5-2, and No. 48 Maryland, 7-0. Emily Lauten leads team in wins at 16, while Martha Blakeley holds down the No. 1 position at 9-5 in duals and 13-9 overall.

The Tribe leads the all-time series at 14-2, including a 7-1 mark in Williamsburg. The Green and Gold has won 12 straight in the series against Virginia Tech, including a 5-2 win in Blacksburg last season.
