The William and Mary volleyball team put up a tough fight against Duke in the season-opener Friday night, pushing the first set to extra points and coming within two in the third set as well before ultimately falling by a score of 3-0. The match is the first of three for the Tribe at the Duke Invitational, with matches against Milwaukee and Fairfield coming on Saturday.
Box Score
Senior middle Shaylin O'Connell (Leesburg, Va.) was the top point-getter for the Tribe in the match, scoring eight kills with three blocks. Sophomore Manon Murray (Greensboro, N.C.) also had a team-high eight kills, pairing hers with eight digs. Redshirt-sophomore Paulette Grand Pre (Laguna Beach, Calif.) was close behind with seven kills and 10 digs.
Other notables included junior Julia Swalchick (Melbourne, Fla.), who had five kills on a .333 attack and three blocks. Freshmen Mallory Brickerd (Ashburn, Va.) and Carolyn Albright (Raleigh, N.C.) each had three kills in their first collegiate action, and Albright and sophomore Liz Brown (Ellicott City, Md.) each tied for the team lead with three blocks apiece.
The Tribe's other category leaders on the night included sophomore Carolina Rivas (Orlando, Fla.), who collected 20 assists and five digs. Senior Molly Krull (Raleigh, N.C.) also contributed at setter, chipping in 13 assists, five digs, and a service ace. Redshirt-sophomore Devin Andrews-Lyssy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) picked up 14 digs in the libero's spot.
The first set typified the see-saw battle between the two squads. Duke managed to eke out a slim 11-8 lead early, but two kills from Grand Pre ignited a 7-1 run by the Tribe that swung a three-point advantage the other way at 15-12. The two teams continued to find ways to score points off each other, reaching a tie at 22-22. Trading points led to further ties at 23- and 24-all, before Duke was able to claim a 26-24 win.
The host school took a 2-0 lead in the match after winning the second set 25-18, and looked to be off to a hot start in the third set as well with an early 4-0 lead. W&M was undaunted, however, and fought back to a 7-7 tie with important contributions coming from all over the floor. The rest of the set would go much the same way, with the Tribe hanging tight to Duke and continually knotting the score after Duke would gain a one- or two-point lead. Finally, the Tribe got its nose out in front at 18-17 and 19-18, capitalizing on mistakes by the Blue Devils and another powerful swing from Grand Pre. Duke earned six of the next points to stand at match point, but the College still had fight left in it and scored three in a row (including a kill from Swalchick and Krull's ace), threatening to force extra points and a fourth set, before Duke earned the final point and the win.
William and Mary is back in action Saturday at noon, taking on UW-Milwaukee. The Panthers, defending Horizon League champions, won their match on Friday 3-1 over Fairfield.
