The William and Mary volleyball team continued to make positive steps early Saturday afternoon, winning a set and staying close in two others against Horizon League power Milwaukee before falling 3-1.  The Tribe is now 0-2 on the year against a pair of NCAA-qualifying teams.

Box Score

Sophomore Liz Brown (Ellicott City, Md.) picked up right where she left off last year, scoring a career-high 15 kills on a team-best .375 attack.  She also had a hand in two blocks and provided two digs.  Freshman Dessi Koleva (Torrance, Calif.) saw her first extended action and responded with eight kills and a team-high 16 digs, while classmate Carolyn Albright (Raleigh, N.C.) had a match-best five blocks to go with three kills.

The veteran duo of Shaylin O'Connell (Leesburg, Va.) and Paulette Grand Pre (Laguna Beach, Va.) continued to impress, scoring six kills each.  O'Connell added four blocks, while Grand Pre's day included nine digs.  The Tribe's two setters also played well, combining to average 11 helpers per set.  Senior Molly Krull (Raleigh, N.C.) had 17 assists, adding two aces, three kills, and four digs.  Sophomore Carolina Rivas (Orlando, Fla.) had 20 assists, and another four digs.  Rounding out the notables, junior Celine Alasomuka (Centreville, Va.) had two aces and eight digs, and classmate Julia Swalchick (Melbourne, Fla.) helped out on four blocks to go with two kills.

Much like the previous match, the Tribe and the Panthers kept things close in the first set with several tie scores late before Milwaukee was able to eke out a 26-24 win.  Early in the second set, it looked as if Milwaukee would ride that moment to a dominant win, but W&M recovered from an early 4-0 deficit with a 10-1 run to jump in front, 15-11.  The streak included three blocks for the Tribe, as well as kills from all over the court.  Milwaukee tried to close back in, getting as near as two at 16-14, but a kill from O'Connell sparked another 6-1 run and allowed the Tribe to run away to a 25-19 win.

With the match tied at 1-1, the third set began with the Panthers again getting in front early, and relying on an extended run to pull out to a 17-9 lead.  W&M was right there with a response again, winning 11 of the next 14 points to close within a point at 21-20 on a kill from Brown.  The Tribe was also able to get points from one of Krull's kills and a block by Swalchick and sophomore Manon Murray (Greensboro, N.C.), but Milwaukee held on to claim the set 25-22.  The third set was tight early after matching 7-2 runs by each team left the score tied at 9-9, but the Panthers' championship experience began to show and they were able to finish out the match with a 25-16 victory.

William and Mary will take on Fairfield at 5 p.m., in the third-place match of the Duke Invitational.
